One of the greatest joys of working in a primary school is that every single day, our students remind us of the power of curiosity. Children explore, experiment, ask questions, try new things, and — when we least expect it — show us just how far a spark of interest can take them.
Sometimes learning happens in the classroom, through a carefully planned lesson. Sometimes it happens in the yard, over a shared idea or a friendly challenge. And sometimes, like this week, we discover that our students have taken their curiosity, confidence, and initiative far beyond the school gates… and achieved something quite extraordinary.
Recently, four of our students quietly entered the Melbourne School Downball/Handball Competition — entirely on their own. No coaching staff from school, no behind‑the‑scenes organising from us, no reminders from teachers. Just pure drive, enthusiasm, and the courage to put themselves out there (as well as a lot of parental support, I'm sure!).
What happened next left us absolutely thrilled.
With an incredible score of 568 points, our team outplayed schools from across the city, earning the top overall score and officially making us the best school in Melbourne for handball! To give you a sense of just how outstanding this is, the second‑place school finished all the way back on 461 points.
Our champion players were:
Mason (4M)
Man Lok (4M)
Man Tik (3D)
Jeremy (4G)
And the trophy? Let’s just say it’s bigger than a Prep student — and proudly on display!
What makes this achievement particularly special is not just the win itself, but how it came about. These students demonstrated independence, determination, and a willingness to step forward and challenge themselves. They showed that learning doesn’t just happen when adults are watching or directing; it happens when children feel empowered to pursue what they love.
To Mason, Man Lok, Man Tik, and Jeremy — thank you for inspiring us. You’ve reminded our whole community what can happen when curiosity meets courage to put yourself out there.
