Lunar New Year celebrations in our Junior School
Students across the junior school recently celebrated Lunar New Year in Chinese language classes through a variety of engaging cultural and language activities. The celebrations helped students learn about Chinese traditions while developing their understanding of language and culture.
Our youngest learners, from Prep to Year 2, explored the festival through storytelling and they learned that red symbolises good luck and that the Chinese calendar follow a 12-animal zodiac cycle. To celebrate the Year of the Horse, students participated in a colouring competition filled with creativity and excitement.
Students in Years 3 and 4 made their own colourful lanterns to take home, sharing wishes of good fortune with their families. They also learned the popular New Year song Gong Xi Gong Xi 恭喜恭喜, practising traditional greetings commonly used during the festive season.
Year 5 students took part in a cultural quiz and began researching the Dragon Dance and Lion Dance, discovering why these performances are believed to bring luck and happiness for the new year. Year 6 students explored Chinese paper cutting(剪纸)a traditional art form recognised as world cultural heritage, and challenged themselves by reading and writing Chinese characters such as 春节 (Spring Festival) along with festive greetings including 新年好 and 春节快乐.
These activities allowed students to experience Lunar New Year through stories, art, music, language and cultural exploration. It was wonderful to see students across all year levels engaging with Chinese traditions while developing curiosity and respect for different cultures.
We wish our whole school community happiness, good health, and good fortune in the Year of the Horse — 新年快乐!
