Meet our Prefects

In this fortnight's edition of The Fountain, we're delighted to introduce three of our Year 12 Prefects for 2026: Hal Cormack, Chloe Riley and Bella Carter. Together, they help bring the College's mission to life – spiritually, socially and environmentally – by nurturing our College ethos, leading initiatives that put faith into action and guiding our community in caring for creation.
Hal Cormack
Prefect for Social Justice
My name is Hal, and I’m someone who cares deeply about people and about making things better than I found them. Over the years at school, I’ve been involved in mentoring younger students, coaching and helping run initiatives that bring different year levels together. Outside of leadership roles, I’m strongly drawn to the arts, especially creative expression that explores identity and emotion.
Art has always been a space where I think, question and reflect, and that perspective has shaped how I show up in leadership. I’m curious, I ask questions and I genuinely want to understand different experiences and viewpoints.
As Prefect for Social Justice, my goal is to empower students to feel that their voices truly matter and that change is possible within our own community. I hope to create initiatives that are not only symbolic but impactful, strengthening partnerships with local organisations, leading awareness campaigns that inspire action and fostering safe spaces for respectful conversations about justice, equality and sustainability. I want social justice to feel accessible and achievable for everyone, not distant or overwhelming. Most importantly, I aim to lead alongside my peers, encouraging collective responsibility and showing that when we stand together, we can actively shape a kinder and more just future.
Chloe Riley
Prefect for Environment and Sustainability
I’m in my 14th and final year at St Mary’s College. I’ve grown up travelling the world and aspire to spend a year abroad following graduation. My favourite place I’ve travelled to is Japan. The scenery and culture were so beautiful, and I hope to go back one day. I aim to study international law in Melbourne and continue my love for the Italian language. My dream would be to work for the United Nations or the International Criminal Court. I spend my free time walking my dog Gilbert, playing the piano and watching sport with my dad.
I’m extremely happy to be the 2026 Prefect for Environment and Sustainability, a role that younger me would be so proud of. I've always been a passionate advocate for creating a better world, and in my final year at St Mary's College I hope to make a meaningful impact through fundraisers, events and community‑focused initiatives and my ongoing work with the Footprint team.
The College has always excelled in sustainable innovations, and I would love to pitch an idea revolving around sustainable electricity. I wouldn’t be able to achieve any of this without the help of Mrs Walter, my fellow Year 12s, Junior School Prefect for Environment and Sustainability, Madeleine McCormack, and the wider College community.
Bella Carter
Prefect for Identity and Mission
My name is Bella, and I joined the St Mary's College Kinder Koalas in 2013. I am now in Year 12 studying Biology 3, English Inquiry 3 and Health Studies 3. Throughout my time at St Mary’s, I have participated in many school sports including rowing, swimming, water polo, soccer and sailing.
Outside of school, I sail the 29er and am currently training for the 2027 Nationals in Sandringham. I also recently started coaching school sailing through RYCT, where it feels incredibly rewarding to share my knowledge.
As Prefect for Identity and Mission in 2026, I hope to create inclusive and meaningful opportunities for every student. One of my goals is to introduce contemporary music into our liturgies and assemblies, enriching the way we connect with and express our faith. I’m also committed to fostering student leadership within the College’s Identity and Mission life, whether that’s speaking at assemblies, supporting initiatives or serving behind the scenes through Inservio (a group of senior students who help support and lead the liturgical and prayer life of the College).
