Wii Gaay Learning Hub 2- “Stronger Together”, Sydney NSW
The theme of "Stronger Together" was strongly evident in all the extraordinary learning hubs led by our amazing IT, Literacy and Mathematics facilitators Mrs Walters, Mrs Guest and Mrs Rowsell, who was supported by the amazing team of AEAs and support teachers. Students were welcomed to the National Centre of Indigenous of Excellence in Redfern by Elder in Residence, Aunty Beryl Van-Oploo - founder of Yaama Dhiiyaan - Australia's first and only hospitality college specialising in Indigenous culture and cuisine.
The children participated in Wii Gaay learning hubs, a Tribal Warrior cruise to Be-lang-Le-wool (Clarke Island) to learn about stories and culture of the Cadigal, Guringai, Wangal, Gammeraigal and Wallumedegal people of Sydney and visited the Reconciliation Church. The students also had the privilege to meet a First Nation Illawarra Hawks basketball player William "Davo" Hickey and Sydney Kings basketball players Tyler Robertson and Keli Leaupepe.
To conclude the journey of our Year 6 Wii Gaay students, they gathered together to farewell Wesley, Lani, Isabelle, Des, Rory, Kiarnee, Connor, Jacob & Louis.
Student Voices:
1. Where was your favourite place you visited and why?
Kiarnee - Clarke Island because we got ochred up and danced together.
Louis - The Sydney Opera House because it looks very cool, the history is interesting and it has a lot of interesting facts about it.
Ivy - I enjoyed visiting the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. They were amazing sights to see. I didn’t realise how big the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge were until I put them in perspective. I had only flown over or had seen them from a distance. I also enjoyed the train ride because I had never travelled on a train over a long distance.
2. What was your favourite activity you completed?
Kiarnee - My favourite activity was the IT activities because we got to choose a story about anything in our life and draw about it.
Louis - I liked going on the boat because we got to experience an Aboriginal island when we got off.
Ivy - My favourite activity was the visit to Clarke Island, I learnt an Aboriginal dance and about how the didgeridoo was made. I also looked up to our tour guide who was only 16. She already knew a lot about culture.
3. What did you love about Wii Gaay Term 4?
Kiarnee - I really enjoyed my Wii Gaay graduation.
Louis - I liked that it was held in such a big place, the activities were really fun and interesting.
Ivy - It was good to travel to Sydney, and having the opportunity to see a big city.
4. Using 1 word, how would sum up your Wii Gaay excursions for 2024?
Kiarnee - Exciting
Louis - Excellent
Ivy - Adventurous

Special thanks to those families who have already donated items. Some suggestions are non-perishable basic items such as noodles, cereals, biscuits, muesli bars, tea, coffee, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner etc. In addition to these items, they are hoping for some items to help people in need celebrate Christmas, such as chocolates, lollies, soft drink, Christmas puddings etc. Please help us share the Christmas spirit of giving to those in need.
