Advent
As we prepare our hearts and homes for Christmas, the Catholic Church invites us to enter into the beautiful season of Advent. This special time, beginning on Sunday, is filled with hope, reflection, and joyful anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Advent, which means "coming" or "arrival," is a season when we prepare our hearts for Christmas, recognising Christ’s presence in our daily lives and in our relationships with others. We also reflect on Jesus’ promise to come again in glory, reminding us to live with faith and hope.
How We Celebrate Advent
In the Church, Advent is marked by beautiful traditions that help us focus on the true meaning of this season:
- The Advent Wreath: This circular wreath of evergreens holds four candles, representing the four weeks of Advent. Each Sunday, one more candle is lit—three purple for penance and preparation, and one rose for joy (on the third Sunday)
- Prayer and Reflection: Families are encouraged to pray together and reflect on Scripture, asking God to help them prepare their hearts for Jesus
- Acts of Kindness: Advent is a wonderful time to focus on giving and caring for others, especially those in need.
Ideas for Celebrating Advent at Home
- Create Your Own Advent Wreath: Light a candle each week and share a simple prayer as a family.
- Start a Kindness Calendar: Write down small acts of kindness to do each day leading up to Christmas.
- Read the Nativity Story: Share the story of Jesus’ birth from the Gospels, helping your children connect with the meaning of Christmas.
Advent is a wonderful opportunity to slow down, reflect, and prepare for the joyous celebration of Jesus' birth. We hope this season brings your family peace, joy, and a deeper connection to the true meaning of Christmas.
Wishing you a blessed Advent season.
