GENERAL
It was wonderful to see so many friends and family members, including grandparents, of our students last Friday. Grandparents and Special Visitors Morning was a highlight, as students had the chance to showcase their classrooms and take their special visitors to the book fair!
Last Thursday, our Year 5/6 students were also lucky enough to attend a senior school production of A Christmas Carol by Marcellin and OLMC, giving them a glimpse into the world of theatre and an exciting experience.
We have many upcoming events to look forward to, including Year 5 speeches for next year’s leadership opportunities, swimming lessons, and Year 6 Graduation. It’s a busy term ahead, and we’re excited to see our students work hard and get involved in all these exciting activities. Keep up the fantastic work.
LITERACY
In Literacy this term, Year 5 and 6 students have been exploring the concept of perspective. They have been learning that stories and events can be understood in multiple ways depending on who is telling them. They discovered that people interpret the same event uniquely, influenced by their background, beliefs, and role in the situation. For example, students discussed how a mother asking her child to tidy their room could be viewed differently by each person involved. In a historical context, students used their prior knowledge of the invention of the telephone, examining various perspectives to compare and contrast its potential impacts on society. They considered how a single invention could bring both positive and adverse effects depending on when, where, and how it was introduced. By incorporating research, students gained insight into how understanding different viewpoints is essential for interpreting stories and events more fully.
NUMERACY
This week, we are introducing students to the concept of algebra, starting with recognising number patterns and understanding the relationship between multiplication and division as inverse operations. Students are learning to explain this connection and use it to build families of number facts, which strengthens their mental math skills. They are also beginning to solve for unknown values in equations involving multiplication and division, applying their knowledge of number properties and operations. These activities help students build a strong foundation in algebra, enhancing their problem-solving abilities and preparing them for more complex mathematical concepts.
INQUIRY
Building on their knowledge and research of historical events, students will explore how social justice movements from the past continue to impact today’s world. They will reflect on how the lessons from these events can inspire their own actions and connect these values to the teachings of Jesus and current social justice issues.
