Official Opening of the Gym 2011
As the saying goes, 'You only have one chance to make an impression'. The moment was set and the scripts were completed and all was in readiness. The Official Opening was on! This was a ‘huge event’ in the life of Mount Evelyn Christian School and it was carried off with great effect. For the many families who came to celebrate the opening of our new facility, it was a memorable show. Martin focussed the crowd and the program proceeded to tell the story of the ‘journey of the MECS gymnasium’.
Various speakers, from Jack Merx to Anne-Maree Forbes, recounted the many years MECS has been waiting for a gym. Each speaker focused on topics including ‘the pioneers’, ‘the builders’, ‘the ‘disappointeds’, ‘the left too soons’ but finally finished with those who represented ‘the blessed’. Ultimately we are all blessed to have such a wonderful place for our community but the story from the past was one of continuing hope and ultimately satisfaction when the gym had been realised.
The involvement of our students, was a highlight, and after all the gym is for them and all the students of MECS future.
Martin spoke formally and introduced each of the politicians appropriately. Each of the key speakers acknowledged the school as an integral part of the community and it was great to hear that the parent body was commended for their ongoing support and sacrifice for the school.
Martin's vision to create a traditionally MECS style opening was a key reason for the success of the day. To all the others who played various roles, it just goes to show that when a community bands together in a sacrificial way, amazing outcomes can occur. This is one satisfied MECS Physical Education teacher with a memory that will stay with me for a long time to come.
