From the Principal

Dear Families,

At Galilee we pride ourselves on fostering partnerships between parents and carers, our school and the wider community and we aim to work together to enhance student learning opportunities.

The past two weeks have highlighted the positive impact our parents and the wider community have at Galilee.

Soiree by the Sea

Saturday night was a perfect example of our incredibly supportive parent community. It was wonderful to see parents and staff dress up for our Soiree by the Sea; the annual parent gala night at Encore in St. Kilda. It was a spectacular night where good food, excellent company and impressive dancing was enjoyed by all. We were blown away by the generosity of our community - an incredible $31,901 was raised on the night! Money raised will go towards enhancing technology resources we offer our students, ensuring they have access to the best equipment available. Organising, planning and running an event like this takes a superhuman effort - we will never be able to repay Jodie Hoefer, Natalie Calafiore, Carmen Carnovale and the GPA subcommittee for what they did to produce an event of this standard.

World Cup Soccer Fever at Galilee

Last Friday was the perfect example of partnerships we are creating with the wider community. Last Friday, we came together to celebrate the spectacular Matilda’s and our love of soccer within the Galilee community. Students came to school dressed in their soccer gear and participated in coaching sessions and games with a coach from Port Melbourne Football Club. We would like to thank Mr. Greene for organising the day and Adam Piddick from Port Melbourne Football Club for the soccer clinics and games. On the day we raised $350 for Royal Children’s Hospital. We were delighted You can find more information on the School News Page.

Grandparent’s Day at Galilee

Next week we will celebrate the role our extended families play in our students lives. On Monday 21st August, we are celebrating Grandparents and Special Persons Day at Galilee. We would like to extend a warm invitation to all Grandparents and Special People to attend Galilee on Monday morning. The day will start with a school Mass at Ss. Peter and Paul at 9am. Following Mass, Grandparents and Special People are encouraged to visit the students in their classrooms and then stay for a Morning Tea in McGuire Hall. The bookfair will be open during this time for Grandparents and Special People to buy a book if they would like to. Please find more information about Grandparents Day on the School News Page.

Next Week is Book Week at Galilee

Next week is Book Week. We have a range of exciting activities organised for the students. Students will engage in workshops with authors, the Year 6 classes will visit the State Library, all students will attend a special performance and complete a range of different activities about the shortlisted books. There are some Book Week Competitions running at the moment. These were handed out by teachers earlier in the week. Preps can enter by creating a new book cover for their favourite book, Year 1/2 can enter by writing a book review and Year 3-6 can enter by turning their favourite book into a comic strip. The Book Week competitions will close Tuesday 22nd of August. On Friday students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. We will be holding a Book Week Assembly and Parade at 9am on Friday. More information about Bookweek can be found on our School News Page.

**Please note that there is a clash with Dendy Athletics falling on the same day as our Book Week Dress Up day. Students attending Dendy Athletics can come to school dressed as their favorite book character on Thursday next week, however we will not be able to hold a parade on Thursday as we have a number of activities and events planned throughout the day.

Book Fair

The Book Fair arrives at Galilee next week. It will be open before and after school and after Mass on Monday for Grandparents Day. The Book Fair will be filled with books, posters, pens, bookmarks etc. We encourage you to pop into the Book Fair before or after school.

Fathers Day and Footy Colours Day at Galilee

On Friday 1st September we are celebrating Fathers Day and Footy Colours Day at Galilee. We will start the day at 7.30am-9am for a Father’s Day Breakfast and activities in the Maguire Hall and on the school grounds. At 9.30am we will have a Special Father’s Day Mass at St. Peter and Paul Church. Students are encouraged to wear their footy* colours on Friday 1st September (*footy can include AFL and soccer). Students will be participating in AFL activities and may even get the opportunity to meet an AFL player. We are holding an extra special event for our Year 6 students and their Dads/Special People on Friday. Year 6 families are encouraged to look out for more information from Mr. Greene on Dojo. Please see more information about the Fathers Day Breakfast on the School News page.

Parent Teacher Conferences in Term 3

We acknowledge the importance of home-school partnerships and invite you to attend the upcoming Student / Parent / Teacher Conferences for families with students on Thursday 7 September.

An Operoo request has been sent to families this week so that bookings can be made. When booking, please be sure to indicate if you will be attending on site or would like to meet via an online link that will be sent to you just prior to your time.

Please note that students will attend school for a full day on Thursday 7th September. We have revised the timeframe and location of conferences this time around and are not requiring students to be collected early.

The Parent Teacher Conferences will go for a period of TEN minutes. We have allocated a few minutes between each appointment so that Parent Teacher Conferences are offered as either an on-site, face-to-face conference or as a virtual Google Meet conference.  You will be able to allocate your preference in the Operoo Form.

Parents attending onsite will go directly to the Basketball Stadium to meet with the teacher. All face-to-face meetings will occur in the Basketball Stadium. Parents attending the virtual meeting will receive a link emailed by the class teacher.  Links will be emailed the day ofthe Parent Teacher Conference.

These scheduled conferences will provide an opportunity for a discussion about student achievement, student progress, behaviour and work habits, areas of future growth and ways students will be supported at school and may be supported at home.  The purpose is to create a stronger partnership between home and school and ensure that families are on the same page as teachers and can work in a collaborative way to support student learning.

We encourage you to talk to your child prior to the conference about their learning; asking them what they are proud of and any areas they would like to improve.  After the conference, we encourage you to talk to your child about their learning; expressing positively about their achievements and positively about the different ways they will be supported to continue to learn.

Teachers will be instructed to make another time if parents raise other concerns not linked to Student Learning or request detailed information about specific assessment.  There will not be time to go through each assessment in the 10 minute conference, teachers will only be providing families with an overview of learning achievement at this time.  Parents are reminded of our Parents, Visitors and Volunteers Policy on our website and that all interactions need to occur in a respectful manner.

Our teachers look forward to meeting with you at school for the Parent Teacher Conferences.

Galilee at the Movies

Our School Concert, Galilee at the Movies is fast approaching. Tickets to our four shows went on sale yesterday.

Galilee at the Movies Costumes

Most of the costumes will be provided by Dance World - however, there may be some classes that need to provide basic accessories e.g a white t-shirt and /or some everyday clothes.

If you do not receive a request to provide items it means you do not need to provide anything.

Information of what parents need to provide and by when will be sent out to those parents, as soon as possible.

Ticket prices have remained the same as last year - $25.00. This year we have less seats per show to assist with better viewing. Here is a link if you have not already booked.

Please be sure to book for the correct show and time you want to attend.

This year you will be able to select your seats and row when you are booking and be able to print and save your tickets.

Students will be required to attend all four shows as every Galilee student will be performing in all four shows. Galilee students will be required to arrive at school at 5pm on Tuesday 12th September, Wednesday 13th of September and Thursday 14th September. Staff will be supervising students backstage for all four concerts. Students can be collected after the show at approximately 7.10pm.

Thank you again for your continued support. We would not be able to do what we do without the support of parents and carers and the wider community. Together we are able to make a real difference in the lives of our students.
