Dear Parents and Caregivers,

 

“Faith in action is love and love in action is service” Saint Theresa of Calcutta (Feast day September 5th).

 

Over recent weeks eleven Year 11 students have been engaged in significant acts of faith and service for Marian Catholic College, applying for the positions of College Captains and Prefects for their final year of school. 

 

Aotearoa Filipo, Tahlia Sully, Amilia Catanzariti, Rianna Scarfone, Dahlia Abbas, Savannah Vecchio, Ella Savage, Nicolas Minato, Mason Salvestro, Ross Aloniu and Taylor Leilua have put themselves forward to the College, their peers and staff, delivering passionate and thoughtful speeches, undergone a whole College vote and then presented themselves for a personal interview with a panel of leaders.

 

All students have demonstrated that they have a well developed and considered understanding of the core elements of Marian’s vision and mission-faith, care, service, learning and stewardship. These themes were prevalent throughout their speeches and interviews. From this outstanding group of young people, keen to serve, care and support their peers over the next twelve months, our difficult role was to select the four who would become College Captains and Vice Captains for 2024. The process of discernment included considering all applications, reviewing student achievements and learning progress, the community service undertaken, their presentations and speeches, the voting tallies and finally the findings of the interview panel.

 

From this abundance of information, we knew that even in selecting four candidates to be the College Captains, we had a group of eleven outstanding young leaders, all of whom will take on specific leadership roles in different areas of service across the College. I know that the parents and family will be very proud of these caring, empathetic, energetic and talented young leaders. To our prospective student leaders, congratulations on behalf of everyone of us here at the College. Well done on your achievements and excellent efforts so far. 

 

The four College Captains will be announced during the Year 12 Awards Ceremony in Week 10 this term. They will then formally take on the roles and responsibilities from our magnificent MCC College Captains for 2023: College Captains- Elizabeth Romeo and Lachlan Chant and Vice Captains- Jess Moraschi and Charlie O'Sullivan. 

Learning 

The six years of secondary school learning is finally coming to a close for our current Year 12 cohort. What may have seemed like a long stretch of daunting learning ahead of them in Year 7 is now rapidly moving into weeks, days and hours left as secondary students at MCC. 

 

Final preparations for exams, major works and skills and competencies are slipping into a blurry whirlwind of study, being with your friends and mates and thinking about the adult world waiting beyond the school walls. 

 

During this time, I say to our Year 12 students: remember what is important to you and who is important to you. Cherish these moments also as an important part of your learning journey at Marian. Whether what you value most is friendship, laughter and support… the funny memories, the learning you loved and the learning you really had to make yourself do, the teachers and people who loved you, cared for you and got you through-remember and cherish these special times.
