Year 10 Work Experience: A successful week of learning beyond the classroom

In Week 10, our Year 10 students participated in the annual Work Experience program. This is always a highly anticipated opportunity for students to step outside the classroom and gain first-hand insight into the world of work.

Throughout the week, students were placed across a wide range of industries including health, education, trades, business, hospitality and community services, providingd valuable opportunities for students to develop workplace skills, explore potential career pathways and build confidence in professional environments.

The program was a great success, with many employers commenting on the enthusiasm, professionalism and positive attitude shown by our students. It was wonderful to see students embracing new challenges, learning from experienced professionals and gaining a deeper understanding of what different careers involve.

Where possible, members of staff visited and called workplaces during the week to check in on students and speak with employers. These visits are an important part of the program and provide a chance to hear directly about the experiences students are having and the skills they are developing.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the many local businesses and organisations who generously hosted our students and helped make this experience so valuable. Your support plays an important role in helping our students explore future pathways and build important workplace skills.

Well done to our Year 10 students for representing the school so positively and making the most of this important opportunity.

Have a safe and restful Easter and Holiday period.

Year 10 Career Profiling

When it comes to study and career choices, most people fit into one of two categories – those who take it as it comes and those who take responsibility for their own choices.

One path leads to accepting what is offered or suggested by others, and the other path provides the freedom to take control, search for and dare to follow your dream.

Some of the questions students should start thinking about in Year 10 include:

  • What subjects do I need to study in Year 11 and Year 12 for the career I want?
  • Am I suited for that particular career?
  • What are my strengths and weaknesses?
  • What are my personality traits and interests?
  • What training or study do I need or wish to do?

To help students begin this fact-finding and decision-making process, we provide each student with a comprehensive career aptitude and personality profiling instrument. The aim of this profiling program is to help students have a better, more realistic understanding of their capabilities, strengths, weaknesses, interests, and preferences.

Students will use the profiling results to help plan their VCE studies and prepare for future career and further study options. The Career Profiling Session will be conducted by Career Avenues, a very experienced and respected career development organisation. The cost of the programme is included in the Year 10 Student Levy ($45).

Experience has shown the strong benefits of this programme as an aid to making critical decisions for the final years of schooling. We urge students to have a positive attitude, which will encourage more accurate results, and provide the best information for career guidance and subject choice.

The Career Profiling Session will be held in the School Gymnasium between 9:00am and 12.50pm on Tuesday 28 April. Students are required to bring their fully charged laptop to school on the day along with their laptop charger.

What is the UCAT and do you need it for University?

UCAT ANZ stands for the University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand. It’s an admissions test used by many universities when selecting students for medicine, dentistry, and some other clinical degrees. Unlike school exams, the UCAT doesn’t test knowledge from specific subjects. Instead, it focuses on skills that are important in healthcare professions, such as reasoning, decision making, and professional judgement.
