At Marist College Ashgrove, we are proud to be part of a community that seeks to form young men of character, compassion and courage. This week, our College will mark International Women's Day (Sunday 8 March) through a series of meaningful initiatives that invite reflection, gratitude and action.
Our week will begin with a special Assembly led by and dedicated to the dynamic and powerful women on our staff. Their leadership, professionalism and care play a vital role in shaping the lives of our young men each day. This gathering will provide an important opportunity to acknowledge their contribution to the life of the College and to reflect on the influence of women in our families, workplaces and wider community.
Throughout the week, students will also engage in activities centred on this year’s theme, “Give to Gain.” This theme challenges us to consider how generosity – of time, respect, opportunity and advocacy – leads not to loss, but to growth for all. Our boys will be invited to make personal pledges about how they can actively promote dignity, equality and respect in their everyday interactions. These pledges are designed to move beyond words and into action, encouraging habits that contribute to a culture where all people are valued.
A significant practical expression of this commitment will be an initiative led by Ms Henry and Foley House in partnership with Zonta International. Together, students will work to compile birthing kits for women in under-resourced communities around the world. Access to basic medical and hygiene supplies during childbirth is something many of us take for granted; however, for countless women in developing nations, such essentials are not readily available. These kits will provide critical supplies that can help ensure safer birthing conditions and uphold the dignity of mothers and newborns.
This initiative reflects the very heart of a Marist education – one that calls our young men to solidarity with those on the margins and to practical service in response to real need. By participating in this project, students are reminded that small acts, when offered generously, can have life-changing impact.
Looking ahead to next week, on Tuesday 10 March, our community will come together for the AIC Swimming Championships. All Year 12 students will attend to support our swim team, demonstrating College spirit, pride and unity. Their presence on the day is an important expression of leadership, modelling enthusiastic and respectful support for their peers as they compete. We wish our swimmers every success and thank our senior students in advance for the energy and encouragement they will bring.
As a Catholic and Marist community, we recognise that honouring the dignity of women, advocating for justice and fostering school spirit are not confined to isolated events on the calendar. Rather, they are commitments that shape who we are and who we seek to become. We look forward to these significant moments in the life of our College and thank our staff, students and families for their continued support in fostering a culture of respect, inclusion and service within our community.
