Our Construction Immersion students recently took part in an exciting industry experience that combined a major commercial site tour with hands‑on trade activities, thanks to our valued partners at Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ).
Students began the day at the West Village Precinct in West End, Brisbane, one of the city’s most significant urban renewal projects. Guided by industry professionals, they explored the scale and complexity of the multi‑stage development, gaining insight into modern construction practices, structural design, site logistics, sustainability considerations, and the coordination required across multiple trades on a live construction site. This real‑world exposure allowed students to connect their classroom learning with actual industry processes and workplace expectations.
Following the site tour, students participated in a CSQ-supported Try‑a‑Trade program, where they were able to develop practical skills across several core construction disciplines. Activities included a tiling workshop, specialist timber staining exercise using MDF as the base for the product, and a framing exercise where students constructed a frame to house their work. These activities encouraged teamwork, problem‑solving, craftsmanship, and safe tool use, while giving students a clearer understanding of potential career pathways within the construction sector.
The day provided an invaluable opportunity for students to immerse themselves in both the professional and practical sides of the industry. We are grateful to CSQ and our industry partners for supporting authentic learning experiences that help prepare our students for future vocational and trade opportunities. Thank you to Mr Martin for accompanying the student on this worthwhile activity.
