Level 5 & 6
Week 1, Term 4
Welcome back to Term 4! We are very pumped for the final term of 2025, with big events ahead of us!
Currently, all Grade 5 and Grade 6 classrooms are running very low on tissues and wipes. We (and our sniffly noses) would strongly appreciate any donations of these items to see us through to the end of the year. If you are able to assist, please give these items to your child to pass onto their classroom teacher.

🌱 LITERACY – Reading
This week in Reading, students are exploring our CBL Big Idea of Discovery by delving into factual texts about the history of digital technology, binary code, and the development of video games and artificial intelligence. Through guided reading and comprehension activities, they will build a glossary of key terms and deepen their understanding of how technology has evolved over time.
What you can do at home:
Encourage your child to share an interesting fact they’ve discovered about early computers or AI. You might be surprised by how much has changed in just a few decades!
🌱 Writing
In Writing, students are beginning the term by setting clear intentions and goals through a reflective task titled “My Dream Term Four…”. Using prompting questions, they’ll consider what they want to achieve, experience, and contribute during their final term of the year.
Students will also explore the traits of effective public speakers and learn how to craft and deliver engaging speeches. Over the next few weeks, they will plan, write, rehearse, and present short speeches to their classmates, focusing on confidence, clarity, and expression.
What you can do at home
Chat with your child about a topic they’re passionate about and what they would want to share about this topic. It might inspire their speech ideas and help them practise speaking confidently in front of an audience.
🌱 NUMERACY
Grade 5 students are diving into data investigation. They will learn how to plan and conduct a statistical inquiry by deciding on a question to explore, collecting relevant and accurate data, and analysing the results. Students will then present their findings in a clear and visual way, such as through graphs or tables, while interpreting what the data reveals.
Grade 6 students are delving into the world of 2D and 3D shapes. They will explore lines of symmetry, identify shapes according to their properties and features, and examine the cross-sections of 3D objects to understand how these shapes relate to one another. This unit will help students strengthen their spatial reasoning and visualisation skills through hands-on and problem-solving activities.
What you can do at home
Students have been assigned Matheltics tasks to complete that are relevant to the area of Mathematics they are learning. Please encourage your child to have this completed by Friday as it supports their learning in the classroom.
🌱 CBL
This week, students are exploring the Big Idea of Discovery by being introduced to the fascinating world of coding and binary code. Using Swift Playgrounds, students will begin learning the fundamentals of coding language, developing their problem-solving and logical thinking skills as they complete interactive challenges. This hands-on experience helps them see how discovery and innovation drive the technology we use every day.
Essential Question:
How can we use coding to solve problems and create solutions in our world?
Guiding Questions:
Challenge:
Design, test and showcase a coding solution in Swift Playgrounds that solves a problem or improves an experience in our school community.
🌱 HOMEWORK
Students are expected to complete homework on a weekly basis. This consists of
- 100 minutes total of reading a novel/factual text of their choice
- 3 (minimum) Mathletics tasks, which the teachers will assign
- 2 Nessy activities
This homework is to be recorded in the Calendar App on student iPads. Your child's teacher will check this homework on Friday.
BUDDY BAGS - Grade 5 students should now only have one task left to complete for their Buddy Bags, which are gifted to their 2026 Prep Buddies. This is the 'Nameplate' task that will be completed in school, once we know our buddy's name. Please check in with your child to see which tasks they may still need support in completing.
MEMORY BOOKS - Grade 6 students will continue to work on their Memory Book to reflect on their experiences at Wonga Park Primary School. This information has been communicated to parents via email, and is available for students on Showbie.
🌿 REMINDERS
🌱 Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged.
