Welcome to Term 4! It’s hard to believe we’ve reached the final term of the year already. Our Foundation students have shown significant growth and confidence, and they are well-prepared to move forward this term as they transition to Year 1!
This term, the Foundation classes are focusing on reading comprehension and writing skills. Throughout Weeks 1 to 3, we have been exploring story elements: thinking carefully about the characters, settings, problems, feelings, and resolutions in the stories we read. Students are also building new vocabulary to expand their word knowledge and improve their ability to describe.
In Phonics, students have been extending their decoding skills from simple CVC words (e.g. cat, shop) to more challenging CCVC words (e.g. step, frog, trip), applying their phonics knowledge to blend sounds confidently and read fluently.
In writing, we have been learning about simple sentence structure. As we move towards writing our own stories, students are learning to make sure every sentence includes a noun and a verb, and possibly even some adjectives to make their writing more interesting!

In Numeracy, we have wrapped up our subtraction unit by working through worded problems. Students have been learning to understand subtraction language such as “take away” and “how many left?” within a sentence. They have also practised generating their own subtraction number sentences and figuring out the answers from the problems given. It has been wonderful to see their growing confidence in using mathematical language to explain their thinking.

This term, our Inquiry topic is Animals and Habitats. Students have been exploring various habitats and learning about the animals that inhabit them. They are discovering how animals are suited to their environments and how these habitats help them survive.

We are incredibly proud of how much progress our Foundation students have made this year. Their enthusiasm for learning, creativity, and growing independence are shining through every day as they get ready for Year 1!
As part of our Term 4 SunSmart policy, please remember: “No hat, no play!” Students must bring a school hat every day to participate in outdoor activities. Please make sure your child's name is written inside the hat.
