Preparing to Be Brilliant Buddies

Year 4 students have been taking part in special sessions to prepare for the exciting and responsible role of being a buddy for our new Preps in 2026.

As part of our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) approach, these sessions recognise that social behaviours, just like literacy and numeracy, should be explicitly taught and practised. We don’t assume students already know how to be a great buddy; instead, we intentionally teach and model the skills and qualities of a brilliant buddy such as being resilient, encouraging, an active listener and an entertaining reader. In the preparation sessions, students have focused on developing particular skills before putting them into practice during buddy time with our kinder groups.

During one of these combined sessions, the Year 4s kindly, patiently and entertainingly read stories to the kinder children in the library. In another session, they planned and led engaging play activities, demonstrating encouragement, cooperation and friendly conversation as they played with their buddies.

Our Year 4 students have thoroughly enjoyed these experiences and have used their learning to be impressive role models, ready to welcome their Prep buddies next year.
