LORRAINE FRANCIS AWARD

 SOPHIE HANDLEY 6D

The Lorraine Francis Community Award is presented each year at schools in the Bentleigh electorate.

It is named after the late Lorraine Francis, former principal of St Peter’s Primary School, East Bentleigh. Lorraine served as principal from 1995 until 2005. In fact, she was principal while Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos was a student at the school.

The state member for Bentleigh, Nick Staikos remembers Lorraine being someone who always taught her students the value of service to others. Whether it was participating in school fundraisers to provide aid for people in remote villages around the world, or for causes closer to home, Lorraine encouraged her students to make the lives of others better. In doing this, she empowered her students to be strong leaders.

Valkstone’s 2024 recipient of the Lorraine Francis Award is Sophie Handley from 6D. Sophie is a school leader, who has such a generous nature and a kind spirit. She does so much to help others at Valkstone and will leave a fabulous legacy.

Well-done, Sophie! We very proud of you.

HOTHAM COMMUNITY SPIRIT &

 LEADERSHIP AWARD

Every year, schools in our local area are asked to nominate one student in grade 6 to be awarded the Hotham Community Spirit & Leadership Award.  This year, Valkstone nominated Ellie Dimitropoulos  The Hon Clare O'Neil presented the award at a ceremony on Friday 13 December. Congratulations Ellie! Below is the speech that Clare gave about Ellie:

Ellie is an exceptional young lady and highly regarded member of the Grade 6 student leadership team.  Ellie is a beacon of positivity within the school. Her sole aim is to ensure all students have the best possible primary school experience.  Ellie is always the first to volunteer her time and efforts to assist teachers and students when needed.  As a Student leader of the Valkstone Sustainability Action Squad, Ellie is committed to making an environmental difference and to assist in the education of junior students becoming environmentally aware.   She is passionate about the school grounds and is often found assisting our maintenance manager with the upkeep of the school grounds.  Ellie is extremely compassionate, shows empathy beyond her years and is an excellent role model to her peers.  Within the school community, she promotes fairness, a sense of belonging and demonstrates a high level of respect.  Ellie displays integrity in all aspects of her life and for these reasons, is being acknowledged as a young leader in our community.

THE JAPANESE WORD OF THE FORTNIGHT

たのしみです (pronounced ‘tanoshimides’) which means ‘Looking forward to’ something is the Japanese Word for the last week (Week 11) of Term 4. You can use ‘tanoshimides’ when you have something to look forward to. For example, if you’d like to say ‘looking forward to the holidays’, you can say ‘holiday tanoshimides’. Please remember to say what you are looking forward to first and ‘tanoshimides’ at the end.

Thank you / ありがとうございます (pronounced ‘aligatoh gozaimas’) for your continuing support for our Japanese program. Happy holidays!
