Year 6 Celebration  Newsletter

Maths:

This term, Year 6 students explored a range of mathematical concepts, enhancing their spatial reasoning and measurement skills through engaging and practical activities. In Space, students mastered Cartesian coordinates, learning how to plot points accurately and navigate the Cartesian plane. They also explored transformations and translations of shapes, applying these concepts in a hands-on way. The unit concluded with an exciting project where students designed their own coordinate plans, demonstrating their understanding of these mathematical principles in a creative and practical way.

In Measurement, the focus was on elapsed time. Students took on the challenge of planning a hypothetical world tour for a concert. This required calculating the travel time between venues and determining the cumulative duration of the concert set list. The task combined real-world problem-solving skills with mathematical precision, sparking enthusiasm and collaboration among the students. These units provided a dynamic and enriching conclusion to Year 6 Mathematics, equipping students with skills and confidence as they prepare for the challenges of secondary school.

Reading:

During Term Four students in Year 6 undertook an author study on three different authors: Pip Harry, Shaun Tan and Steve Herrick. Students unpacked the author considerations for the text and techniques used to engage the reader. There were also opportunities for students to identify themes, summarise the text and discover interesting and new vocabulary. Students were also tested on their reading comprehension and fluency during individual conferences and online testing.

Writing:

Throughout Term Four students looked at two writing genres, one based around writing to explain and the other writing to entertain. Firstly, students researched a topic and wrote a detailed explanation text following the correct structure. They were able to clearly explain their topic with the use of technical vocabulary. The second genre we worked on was poetry. Students were exposed to a range of poetry styles and wrote a variety of their own poems. Students also had opportunity to write a poem for Graduation.

Inquiry:

Year 6 students undertook a unit exploring Digital Technology and Navigation. Students investigated how technology communicates between each other, how it has evolved and its impact on society. Students also learned about States of Matter. Through research and experiments students explored the changes between states, looking at how atoms react and the reversible and irreversible results.

Wellbeing:

We continued to enhance our wellbeing this term with the continual implementation of the Resilience Project. Students explored the importance of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness through a series of carefully planned and targeted learning experiences. Students also undertook sessions based around preparation for puberty. These sessions taught students about the human body and safe relationships.

PERFORMING ARTS

This term students explored a range of music and expressed what styles of music they enjoy most when working together to choose their grade’s graduation song. They then choreographed and rehearsed a dance to this music in preparation for their Grade 6 Graduation. Students also enjoyed rehearsing for their last ever  Kismet Christmas Carols, helping their Prep buddies to build their on-stage confidence when they shared their joint performance with the Kismet Community.

VISUAL ARTS

This term, students created a special piece of art for their Grade 6 Graduation evening. They used the ‘reverse acetate’ technique to produce a self portrait tracing their image in marker and painting the reverse side. Students used their knowledge of colour - choosing warm or cool colours to paint their image and background piece. They enjoyed using various tools to make marks and patterns and completed their artwork designing their frame in metallic markers.

Students had the opportunity to learn about Aboriginal people of Australia. They discovered that stories about the land, animals, ancestors, and the Dreamtime are shared through spoken stories and shown in artwork. Students were introduced to Dot Painting and the use of symbols and lines to tell a story. They created their own personal stories drawing inspiration from the Aboriginal artists studied.

PE

In Grades 5-6 PE classes, students further developed their physical abilities through challenging activities and sports. In preparation for inter-school competitions, students learned, practised, and mastered different game-specific skills. Students continued to refine their skills in different sports such as cricket and rugby league. They refined techniques and strategies while developing sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork to best represent Kismet Park against other schools. Students spent time creating their own games making sure to think about all aspects including rules, equipment needed and game objectives.

To our Grade 6s, it has been a pleasure teaching your Physical Education this year and our school's success gives credit to your level of commitment and dedication to sport. I wish you nothing but the best for all your sporting endeavours at high school.
