Reading Seeds

Dream, Imagine and Create with Coral Vass for high ability writers from Years 3 and 4.

Have you ever wondered where writers get their story ideas? Our students joined award-winning children's author Coral Vass for a day-long writer's workshop, where they had the chance to explore their own story ideas, develop characters and form a story as they took time to dream, create and be reminded of the incredible power of the imagination.

Workshop description:

Session 1 – Where do ideas come from?

  • Coral will share 3 of her books and how she came up with these ideas.
  • The students will workshop 3 story ideas using a personal experience from their memory, an opening sentence, and a picture prompt.

Session 2 – Interviewing our characters.

  • In this session, students will choose one story idea to develop. We will discuss the importance of characters in our stories. The students will then ‘interview’ their characters to get to know them well.

Session 3- Forming our stories.

  • In this session, we will discuss story arc, character arc and story structure. Students will then spend time writing a short story.

The students thoroughly enjoyed this workshop and produce high quality stories. The skills they attained will enrich their writing for years to come.

The attached booklet is to help parents / guardians of children in Prep to Year 2 support and build their children’s literacy confidence at home, while they are learning to read.

Throughout this booklet there are suggestions for making reading fun and interesting. These can be used when your child is reading to you but also when you are reading to your child.

Murrumbeena Primary Schools acknowledge that you:

  • are your child’s first teacher.
  • want your child to succeed as a reader.
  • have a vested interest in your child achieving literacy success.
