In Week 5 our Languages Faculty celebrated Languages Week with the help of three International Student Leaders: Louisa, Alena and Ives. The week started off with Chinese Lantern-making and Mah-jong in the library. A crowd gathered to watch animated games of Mah-jong, and students practised their calligraphy skills on their lanterns. On Tuesday, Alena and her friends Cindie and Lily, ran a wonderful workshop about Vietnamese language and culture for both students and staff. We learnt about the Vietnamese alphabet, useful expressions and increased our general knowledge about Vietnam. On Thursday lunchtime, a group of 17 bakers competed in the annual Bake-off competition, showcasing sweet treats from all around the world. We were lucky to have Mrs Rachael Salter as guest judge. Niamh Power won most beautiful bake with their Chocolate Macarons, Emily Loh won tastiest bake for her Madeleines and Erica Cheong-Holdaway won best celebration of culture with her Indonesian Kue Wajik. We thank all the bakers who took part. A group of Year 12 and year 7 German background students ran a German workshop. A big thank you to Kieran for baking an amazing Black forest cake! The week culminated in an incredible celebration of Languages at our Karaoke event in the Hall on the Friday. Seven performers took the stage, and we heard songs in Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, French and Chinese.  Thanks to Sticks, Avril, Mevo, Cindie, Lani, Charlotte, Erica and Ms Wang’s Year 11s for helping us to celebrate cultural diversity at NHS! Congratulations also to our quiz winners Mr Dave Macindoe, and students Lewis Duong and Jack Wilkinson who won our listening competition about languages spoken by NHS staff. A big thank you to our Library staff and International Centre staff for their support and to everyone who participated in events. We hope to see you get involved again next year!
