Year 8 Heart Dissection

Our Year 8 students recently had the opportunity to explore the structure and function of the heart through a hands-on cow heart dissection.

Before the practical, students engaged in a thoughtful discussion about the ethics of using animals for scientific purposes, considering the importance of respect, responsibility and ethical decision making in science. Students participated enthusiastically in the discussion and signed a declaration committing to following all laboratory safety and ethical procedures during the dissection.

Building on their learning about the circulatory system, students carefully and respectfully examined the different parts of the heart, identifying structures such as the chambers, valves and major blood vessels. Our pictured 8C students did an outstanding job of completing the dissection accurately, safely and with great attention to detail.

The images have been lightly censored for our newsletter, but the dissection itself was impressive, with students’ precision and technique truly standing out!
