Student Artwork - Heidi Anson

Another one of our extremely talented Northcote High students shine with their creativity. Presented in the Beugelaar Gallery Space in C Block, Heidi Anson has created a series celebrating Australian Theatre Actors and the struggles they go through.

Heidi Anson Hopeless Romantics

I wanted to draw attention and celebrate the Australian theatre actors living and performing in a time of economic hardship with a job connected to uncertainty and unreliability.

The paintings feature a variety of characters from a selection of different theatre shows I have seen since early 2025. This includes musical theatre, Shakespeare plays, and contemporary ballet, but there are so many more shows happening in Melbourne and all over Australia that have never had a chance to be shown to a wider audience, to be a reason for a change in the structure of live theatre.

This issue should not be dismissed, as the pattern will only continue to become worse until there are no shows performed, and a higher rate of unemployment will shadow our country than ever before. Because theatre is as tied to the economy as tightly as the noose is tied around the necks of the productions that are unable to continue just because they cannot raise the funds to continue. And that is quite tight.
