Out and about with Mr Walsh

Welcome Back to Term 2

We hope that all of our Surfside families managed to have a restful break and a happy Easter. We hope that those who travelled throughout the break had a safe trip full of adventures and experiences.

We would like to welcome back all of our families and send out a special welcome to the following families who have started with us or will start throughout term 2 - Welcome to the Malan, Georges, Rabl, Cockerill, Philips, Lawicki and Marshall families and we hope that you enjoy your Surfside experience.

It has been fantastic to see our students return to term 2 with a confident and calm nature and we look forward to a busy and eventful term ahead. The calendar already looks full for a busy and engaging term 2 and we also look forward to opening some new learning spaces to engage our students learning and curiousity further. We wish all of our students, staff and families a term full of positive experiences.

A message from the Premier - Jacinta Allan Premiers Reading Challenge 2024 - Explore, Learn & Enjoy

It’s my absolute pleasure to welcome you to the 2024 Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge.

This is my first Reading Challenge as Premier – and I am so excited to get started.

Since the Challenge began, more than 4.3 million young Victorians have read more than 60 million books.

That includes my own kids - with reading one of the best ways we spend time together as a family.

This year’s Challenge is a chance for all of us to explore new books and find new favourites.

With the help of your families and teachers, you’ll learn about different things, and enjoy stories that take you to different places.

But most importantly, I hope you’ll develop a love of reading together.

So please, sign up for the Challenge. And read as many different types of books as you can.

Explore. Learn. Most importantly, enjoy.

Happy reading,

Jacinta Allan

The Challenge encourages students to read a set number of books over the year and record their efforts online. Since the Challenge first began in 2005, more than 4.3 million students have read over 60 million books. More information will be released to students and families throughout term 2 and we hope many of our students can be involved in this intiative.

State Swimming Championships - Melbourne Sport and Aquatic Centre

Australian Early Development Census (AEDC)

Building a National Picture of Child Health

From May 2024, our school, along with thousands of others across the country, will participate in the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).

The AEDC is a teacher-completed census (similar to a questionnaire) which provides a comprehensive picture of how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school.

The AEDC is an Australian Government Initiative and is completed nationally every three years.

Children don’t miss any class time while the AEDC is completed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information.

The data collected through the AEDC is used by schools, communities and governments to better understand children and families’ needs, and identify the services, resources and support they need.

AEDC data is reported at a school, community, state/territory and national level. AEDC results for individual children are not reported and the AEDC is not used as an individual diagnostic tool.

Some teachers have found that completing the AEDC made them more aware of the needs of individual children and their class, and that the data was useful for planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing programs.

Participation in the AEDC is voluntary, however the AEDC relies on all schools with children in their first year of full-time school participating in the collection. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.

To find out more about the AEDC and how it is being used to help children and families visit: www.aedc.gov.au.

If you have any questions, you can contact Lynda Patterson at lynda.patterson@education.vic.gov.au
