STEAM Incursion

By Lachlan Soo

On the 29th of April, our Year 5 & 6 learners welcomed the Bright Future STEM program to our school. In an incursion lasting two hours, both year levels learned about the different career opportunities available in the areas of STEAM and participated in hands-on activities designed to act as an introduction to the different areas. The activities on offer ranged from rudimentary coding using marbles and switches, to electronic engineering using premade circuit boards to even being able to explore a mine site using virtual reality! Our learners loved the activities on offer that day, with each one providing a different perspective as to the role of a professional in the STEAM fields.

Below are some of the children’s reflection about the day:

‘I liked the circuits because I could connect different pieces to make something work’ - Ratana

‘The STEAM incursion was a really good experience for me as we did a lot of exciting activities and learned about what happens in the resource and energy environment.’ - Yash

The second part of the program consisted of industry professionals talking about their careers in the STEAM fields, showing learners the qualities and mindset needed to be an engineer, outlining pathways toward a particular job and fielding questions posed by our students. These experts included an oil rig engineer and a systems engineer based in Papua New Guinea.

Our learners were very appreciative of this portion of the incursion as well, sharing:

‘I really enjoyed when the engineers came and talked about their jobs, and it was very interesting to hear how different professions connected to STEAM’ - Emily

‘It was lots of fun and I learned that engineers worked with electricity such as the Tesla Coil’ - Sayuni

I am very pleased that the day was such a success, a success that was no doubt made possible by the contributions made by the Year 5 and 6 teams. I look forward to the future learning that the program will undoubtedly stimulate.
