Lucy W, Getting into the Wilson House Spirit

BBPS is CyberSafety focussed for term 2. There is a pressure from children on parents to be connected. "It is the parents' job to make tough, unpopular decisions when it comes to access to Mobile Phones in primary school - NO NOT YET!" (C&M McGauran)

Thanks to those of you who joined us for last week's CyberAware session, thanks to Will Crossland for organising - these sessions come at a cost to the school, and this session proved its worth with the most up to date and relevant information for parents to understand.

If you missed it, we strongly recommend you take the time to watch the recording of Carly and Marty McGauran's presentation  "Raising Kids in a Digital World"

Key take aways that staff connected to, based on our observations of our students and some of the learnings we have supported them with lately:

*A no is not no for forever, its a 'Not yet … ' : Primary School is not the age to be giving your child control and access to platforms such as Snapchat or TikTok.

*Check minimum age for app use - most are 13+ however that is not a rating for suitability of material ( which is often very adult and very unsuitable).

*Have an age appropriate conversation about online red flags / early warning signs; who are your trusted adults

*Learn how to put blockers and restrictions on apps (even Youtube Kids!)

*Create boundaries - its not too late to introduce them!

*Create a family plan, e.g. an hour before dream time is the end of screen time.

*Stay informed, it is an ever-changing fast paced landscape.

*Roblox and Fortnite are not "just games".

  • Children on devices must always be in shared areas. No devices in bedrooms.

*Be a mentor to your child - you want them to be able to come to you if they are confronted by something online.  Consider what you say and do to support your child:

I can help you sort any problem

I will love you and support you no matter what

I will not take your device from you if you come to me with a problem (their biggest fear!)
