OE Middle School Camp

with Mel Janson

Last week Middle School OE students attended an overnight camp to Beechworth. During the camp, students explored Beechworth and the surrounding National Parks, with a particular focus on Indigenous and Australian history. Students hiked through the landscape and saw caves, waterfalls and rivers. They had the chance to visit Yeddonba cultural site, Mt Pilot and Woolshed Falls. Students also visited the Beechworth Asylum and Old Beechworth Goal. During the tours we saw the historical buildings but also learnt about the history of Ned Kelly and visited the cells he lived in.

Climate in Chaos

with Rosemary Oldis

In the subject ‘Climate in Chaos’ the Year 8 and 9 students are working on an assessment task about sustainable housing. They firstly researched 8 key features that make a house sustainable and then designed a house that met the criteria. The next step was to begin constructing a model of their house design. Most of the houses are close to 75% completed now. The students have worked very well in their groups to produce interesting and creative models. There has been a lot of learning about a vast range of things, such as: how to upscale measurements, how to safely cut cardboard and balsa wood, how to safely use a glue gun, how to design a solar generated light that could work at night (with the use of a battery), how to share resources and work cooperatively. I’m proud of the efforts put in so far and thrilled with the results.
