Mathematics Competitions

During Term 2, the following twelve students from Years 7 and 8 (Maiya Edwards, Gabrielle McGee, Bronte Secker, Eligh Spees, Grace Wesley, Bon Doan, Clare Stewart, Eadie Macarthur, Simeon Gee, Luke Gibson, James Klein and Xavier Stephens) participated in the Junior Maths Challenge and four students from Year 9 (Ryan Ivery, Zara Nicholas, Nisha Rehn and Noah Yin) participated in the Intermediate Maths Challenge. This is a set of six questions, with four marks allocated to each question, with a four week period to answer these questions. As the name says, they are a challenge and require you to show your reasoning well.

Receiving a Credit Award (top 50% of the state) were Gabrielle McGee, James Klein and Luke Gibson. Receiving a Distinction Award (top 25% of the state) were Simeon Gee, Clare Stewart and Eadie Macarthur.

On Thursday, 17th August, four students participated in the HICES (Heads of Independent Co-Educational Schools) Maths Tournament at Oran Park Anglican College in Narellan. This is the first time it has been run since 2019 with BMGS hosting the previous three tournaments. Our team consisted of two Year 7 students, Simeon Gee and Eadie Macarthur, and two Year 8 students, Alton Freeman and Meggie Le.

The day began with the Swiss Challenge. This involves finding the next number in a table after being given the first three numbers, so establishing a pattern with only being given a few seconds to look at these numbers. There were also a number of questions in the group section where anyone could answer. Finally, there was the relay where Year 7 and Year 8 took it in turns to answer questions. There were eighteen schools in the Tournament and BMGS finished a credible fourth, with Moriah College being winners and Hills Grammar School coming second.

On Wednesday, 2nd August, approximately 100 students participated in the Australian Maths Competition which has been running since 1978 and is the longest running and most well-known Maths Competition throughout Australia. Thank you to all those who participated in this competition. Certificates will be given to the students when they arrive in the Post.
