Message From Head Of Secondary
Steve Sobey
As we look forward to the start of a new year at Christway College, we are excited about what the future is beginning to look like in our secondary school.
Student Leadership
We have already started to set in place our student leadership team by appointing our College Captains and Vice Captains. Led by Ananya Malhotra and Havish Bathula, and assisted by Reet Bhavsar and Philip Fourie, we look forward to seeing our Years 8 and 9 students, step up as role models and ambassadors for our college and wider community. In early 2024, we will also be appointing SRC (School Representative Council) students to join this student leadership team.
Years 7-9 Elective subjects
In 2024 we have offered a greater number of subjects on offer for students to choose from, as they selected their elective subjects for both semesters. Subjects on offer are: Outdoor Education, STEAM, Music, Visual Arts, Media, Athletic Development, Food Technology, Drama, Graphic Design, and ICT – Digital Technologies. Students have been allocated two subjects per semester, according to their preference choices, with the older students given priority in their selections. Although some students may not have received all their higher preferences, they will have an opportunity to undertake those subjects in later years.
Step-up day
We had a wonderful morning on Monday 4 December, where many new students were welcomed into their new homeroom classes to meet their new peers. Students had at taste of some activities for a selection of subjects that will be running in 2024. Due to an increased number of boys in Year 7, we will be trialing an all-boys class in 8B, which will provide a great opportunity to develop a strong male culture at this year level, in addition to the boys in 8A. In 2024 we will be partnering with two local community groups, offering the ‘Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades programs after school hours. We look forward to a smooth transition for all our students when school resumes in Term 1.
Activity Day at Luna Park
On Wednesday 6th December, our Years 7 and 8 students had a fantastic day at Luna Park celebrating the end of year. There were many high-pitched squeals and laughter, not just from the students, but also the staff that accompanied them on their day out.
Music in 2024
We are excited to offer a new music program in 2024, where all students in years 7 and 8 will have music as one of their core subjects. During their music class, all students will be given a group instrumental lesson and then participate in a whole class band rehearsal. In addition to this, should students from all year levels wish to receive an individual lesson, they will be able to do this with one of our new instrumental music teachers.
Students in years 7-9 also have the opportunity to select music as one of their elective subjects. Early in term 1 more information will be provided about our music and instrumental program by our music staff.
Term 1 Camps
We look forward to our secondary camps early in Term 1. Our Year 7 and 8 students will attend a camp at Mill Valley Ranch from Monday 5 to Wednesday 7 February in week 2. Our Year 9 students will go on the first of their four camps from Monday 4 – Friday 8 March in week 6, as part of our new Year 9 program ‘From Creation to Renewal’ in ‘The year of Challenge.’ I would like to acknowledge the incredible work that Mrs Sam Leonardis has invested in putting together this program.
Christmas Greetings
As we head into the Christmas holidays, I pray that you will all have a wonderful time together with your family and friends. As we remember the real reason for the season, I pray that you will personally know His presence in your lives. May the Lord bless you with His love, peace and joy. I look forward to seeing you in 2024.
