Parents don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to give their child the best education, with this year’s NAPLAN results showing many government primary schools are performing just as well as their independent counterparts.

A Herald Sun analysis of 79 of the state’s high-performing primary and secondary schools found grade five students at Wheelers Hill and Bentleigh West primary schools achieved a similar NAPLAN average to those at independent institutions Fintona Girls’ School and Haileybury College.

Out of the four schools, students at Wheelers Hill scored better in grammar, while Fintona Girls’ School received higher reading and numeracy results.

To be considered a high-performing institution, a school has to continually achieve high NAPLAN results relative to similar students over time.

Other high-performing primary government schools that achieved great NAPLAN results include Serpell Primary School in Templestowe, Oakleigh South Primary School, Doncaster Garden Primary School and Beverley Hills Primary School.

Meanwhile, there’s a greater performance gap between high-performing independent, Catholic and public secondary schools, with Fintona Girls School, Haileybury College and Christway College achieving higher averages than schools in other sectors.

Catholic high schools Academy of Mary Immaculate and Killester College in Springvale come in second best, outperforming public schools like Wellington Secondary College in Mulgrave.

But overall, the top high-performing school is independent institution Ballarat Clarendon College, which has achieved some of the best results across both primary and secondary students and is also the best inner regional school.

Outside Melbourne, high-performing government schools Portland Primary School and Horsham College are the top outer regional primary and secondary schools.

St Albans Secondary College is another standout in the west of Melbourne. Principal Craig Jennings said St Albans offered strong intervention programs including the Tutor Learning Initiative, which is funded by Department of Education.

“We have school-funded initiatives in both literacy and numeracy as well. The staff do a lot to support kids who need additional support,” Mr Jennings said.

“We use previous NAPLAN results … to try to identify common misconceptions and gaps in student learning.

“And through our literacy and numeracy committees, we meet and talk about what interventions to put in place across the year, which is successful.”

Mr Jennings added: “The school community all works together to achieve these great outcomes for students.”

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority takes into account socio-educational advantage and the past three years of NAPLAN results to identify a selection of high-performing schools.

A Department of Education spokesperson said: “Thanks to the hard work and resilience of our students, teachers and school support staff, Victorian schools achieved outstanding NAPLAN results in 2023.”

“This year, Victoria ranked first or second in 16 of the 20 NAPLAN studies – one of the state’s best-ever results, and higher than any other state or territory in the nation.”
