Walk or Wheel Wednesday

For all of Term Four, OHR will be involved in the City of Boroondara’s ‘Walk or Wheel Wednesday Challenge.’

Students are encouraged to walk or wheel to school every Wednesday during Term 4 and log their trips to see which school has the highest proportion of walkers or wheelers. This program aims to reduce travel to school by car and to encourage walking or wheeling; cycling, scooting, and skateboarding.

Walking or riding to school helps to increase children’s physical activity, mental awareness during class and to improve their road safety skills and awareness. Giving walking or wheeling a go, even just once a week is a great way of getting families to try healthier and more sustainable travel options.

By setting Wednesdays as a regular day for healthy travel to school, families can be confident that there will be fewer cars and more people around surrounding streets. The class MPs will record how many students are walking or wheeling to school each Wednesday on the poster displayed in each class.

The perpetual Walk or Wheel Wednesday Trophy and a smoothie bike visit will go to the school with the highest proportion of students Walking or Wheeling.

Also, each week the two classes that have the highest proportion of walkers or wheelers in their class, will get a bouncy ball to raffle among those students who walked or wheeled that week.
