Dr Michael Carr- Gregg Presentation (One of Australia’s leading Child & Adolescent Psychologists.)

On Monday night our staff were very fortunate to attend an Educators session with Michael. Staff were highly engaged listening to his presentation, taking away many useful strategies which will help us to continue to support the wellbeing of our students.

On Tuesday our 3-6 Students attended his session. Below are some of the takeaway messages he strongly encouraged us all to take on board-

Michael’s top tips-

  1. Diet- Top brain foods-

  • Eggs
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Tuna/Fish
  • Avocado
  • Nuts
  • Berries
  1. Breakfast-

  • Research has shown that students who eat breakfast work faster and better in class than students who miss breakfast.
  1. Sleep- Kids need 8 – 10 hours of each night.

Tips for good quality sleep-

  • Dim lights 30 minutes before you aim to fall asleep - this helps your brain to wind down.
  • Implement a routine each night- Go to bed and wake up the same time.
  • Sleep in a cool dark room.
  • Minimize anxiety- Smiling Mind is a great free app to use – Eg Body scan
  1. Avoid technology leading into bedtime

  • Screen time in the hours directly prior to sleep is problematic in a number of ways other than just displacing the bed and sleep times of children and adolescents. The content of the screen time, as well as the light that these devices emit, may also be responsible for poorer sleep.
