Year 5 Band and Strings Program

Ms Megan Harmston – Music Co-ordinator

Year 5 students have made a great start to the year in music with instrument allocations being finalised and their musical journey well underway with the commencement of Term 2. We hope this is the beginning of a long connection with music during their time at Marist and beyond and we encourage them to play at home as much as possible.

Students will continue preparing for their first Band and Strings Concert in Term 3 on Thursday 31 July. Further details and a booking link will be emailed closer to the date. In the meantime, we cannot wait to see the boys shine in their performances of ‘Pirates’ the musical this Thursday evening.

Visual Art

Ms Christine Larsen – Curriculum Leader - Arts

As part of Unit 1, “Art as Lens”, our Year 11 Visual Art students had the opportunity to work with Old Boy (2012) Callum Francis during their double lesson in Week 2. Callum presented an artist talk to the students where he shared his journey from studying Visual Art at school, completing a degree in Fine Art and Literature at university, to the present day where he has built a successful career as a full-time practising artist.

During the workshop, Callum shared information with the class on his techniques and processes for developing artworks and then guided students through a series of experimental works using Japanese ink and brush, taking inspiration from the local environment.

We would like to congratulate Year 11 student Alastair Malghem who won first place in the Youth “Contemporary” section at the Aspects Art Show in Goondiwindi last week, for his glazed ceramic work, “Tojiki”. In addition to this, Alastair also received an award in the Under 18 years sponsored section. This is a great achievement and we are very proud to have had Alastair and a number of other visual art students representing the College in this art competition.

Week 2 also saw Year 10 Visual Art students participating in an excursion, which included walking along the Brisbane River Walk from New Farm to Howard Smith Wharves. The focus was on capturing photographs which depicted the intersection between the natural and built environment for an upcoming mixed-media artwork the students will be developing in class as part of their practical folio for assessment. Following the River Walk, students visited The Museum of Brisbane to view two exhibitions, “Precious” which brings together over 3000 curiosities and collectables from 30 public and private collections and “New Light: Photography Now + Then”, an exhibition of works by Brisbane photographers, spanning 1890-2024.
