Auf Wiedersehen, Vermont!

Reflection from one of our German exchange students

I am Maxi from Germany and I spent 8 Weeks at VSC as an exchange student. Going into the school for the first time, everything felt foreign and new. New faces, new voices, new surroundings. But that didn’t last long as it was easy for me to integrate thanks to welcoming students and teachers who showed me around the school, answered all my questions and did their best at helping me fit in at VSC. At recess and lunch so many curious students came up to us Germans to ask about Germany, and in the classroom, teachers seamlessly integrated me into their teaching and students around me treated me like a classmate. All of this made me feel right at home at VSC in just a few days and I’m very grateful for everything. Of course, some things are very different from home like wearing school uniforms, using lockers all of the time or longer schooldays. But what felt unusual at first started to make more sense to me as I went on. It was a refreshing and interesting experience to become part of something that was completely different from anything I’ve done before. Especially towards the end, I started appreciating every little thing at this school and all of the time I got to spend here knowing this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

German Assistant

We would like to extend a very warm welcome to our German assistant Anna Stockhammer who has started working at VSC this term. The college is very lucky to have Anna joining the Languages department for the remainder of this school year.

Here is a short introduction written by Anna:

Hallo!

My name is Anna Stockhammer and I am this year’s German language assistant. I just arrived four weeks ago from the beautiful town of Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg, where I concluded my university studies in secondary education English and Philosophy. I am a native German speaker; therefore, my main task is to help the year 12 students prepare for their VCE, especially the speaking exam. I have sessions with individual students every week to work through the questions with them and answer any questions there may not be time for in class. I am also helping out in other year levels as a walking dictionary or to answer any questions about life in Germany.
