Sydney Writers’ Festival
Have you ever wondered what inspires a children’s author? Or the creative process behind a graphic novel?
Some of our Stage 3 students recently spent a day participating in the Sydney Writers’ Festival Primary School Program at Sydney Town Hall. Our students engaged in a jam packed day designed to inspire the next generation of readers and story tellers. Read on for some great book recommendations.
American cartoonist Terri Libenson shared her journey from creating humorous greeting cards to becoming a New York Times best selling author. Graphic novels are a very popular genre for our students and her interactive presentation was a great way to start the day. Look out for her Emmie & Friends series.
In high school, children’s author Joel McKerrow and his friends found themselves on detention for discovering (and then eating) the graduating Year 12’s fundraising chocolates. This experience became the inspiration for his new book Heist 1 The Great Chocolate Caper. Joel’s advice to our budding writers was to take ordinary experiences and make them extraordinary with the use of imagination and magic.
Popular author Katrina Nannestad took us through the fascinating process of researching and writing her historical novels. Her books challenge young readers to place themselves in historical events and explore what they would do in challenging times. https://www.katrinanannestad.com/
Dr Jared Thomas, a Nukunu person of the Southern Flinders Ranges, highlighted the importance of making connections with community for storytelling. Our surprise author of the day was Jacqueline Harvey who once again inspired our students with the process behind her new novel The Ghost and the Girl.
Our train trip home was a quiet one as our students could not wait to read their signed copies of these fabulous books. A big thank you to Mrs Robinson for a wonderful day of literature!
National Reconciliation Week 27th May - 3rd June
For Reconciliation Week our Indigenous students created and shared their own wonderful Acknowledgement of Country at a special assembly. Our ‘Sorry Day’ artworks with Mrs Ng and classroom activities helped students learn about our shared histories and cultures.
A big thank you to our Indigenous students as well as Mrs Mahoney, Mrs Sleishman and Mr Heelis for creating a special display both inside and outside our Library for Reconciliation Week. Our students have enjoyed borrowing from our Indigenous collections and exploring ways we can all contribute to Reconciliation in Australia.
