Why Do Catholics Celebrate Pentecost?

Have you ever wondered why Catholics celebrate Pentecost Sunday? Imagine throwing a big party for the church - that's what Pentecost is all about! Pentecost marks a pivotal moment in the history of the church.

What Is Pentecost?

Pentecost Sunday is celebrated 50 days after Easter. Pentecost commemorates the day that the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles. This transformative event propelled the Apostles from being followers of Christ to being active messengers of His teachings, effectively marking the birth of the church.

The Historical Context

Post-resurrection, Jesus spent 40 days with his Apostles, teaching and preparing them for their mission. Before His ascension into heaven, Jesus promised them the gift of the Holy Spirit, a divine helper to guide and empower them.

On Pentecost, this promise was fulfilled in a dramatic fashion. The Apostles felt a strong gust of wind and witnessed tongues of fire resting on each other, symbolising the Holy Spirits presence. This event gave them the courage and ability to speak in various languages and to preach the message of Christ to diverse groups of people from different regions.

The Significance of Pentecost

Often described as the "birthday of the Church," Pentecost represents the moment when the Apostles began extending Jesus' mission beyond their immediate community. This day symbolises the early Church's transition from a group of Jesus’ followers into an active, worldwide mission.

The Deeper Message of Pentecost

Pentecost is more than just a historical commemoration. It calls each believer to renew their commitment to living out and spreading the teachings of Christ. It's an invitation to embrace the gifts of the Holy Spirit and to act as vessels of love, peace, and unity in the world.

By embracing the spirit of Pentecost, Catholics are reminded of their role in the continued growth and evolution of the Church, guided by faith and the ever-present influence of the Holy Spirit.

Altar Server Training

We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for children in our school and parish to take part in our new Altar Server Training program. Being an Altar Server is a wonderful way for young members of our community to grow in their faith, deepen their understanding of the Mass, and contribute to parish life in a meaningful way. Boys and girls who have been baptised Catholic and who have received the sacrament are First Holy Communion (or are about to) are welcome to train to become Altar Servers.
