Year 5/6 Team News

with Christina, Emma, Molly, Bianca I, Bianca R, Matt & Brittlee

Hello Year 5/6 families,

What a lovely fortnight we have had in 5/6, despite having to get underway with our mid-year assessments. We have enjoyed some quieter weeks after our busy start with excursions and school sporting events. We are also very much underway with winter school sports and alternative activities and have been blessed with sensational weather. We look forward to Round 4 this week with a home game. Hockey, netball and softball are played on site at school, with AFL and soccer taking place at Fearon Reserve.

Student Voice: Let's hear from some of our amazing students about what has been happening lately…

“I really enjoyed Sovereign Hill because it made me feel like I got transported back in time and the cool soldiers that marched through the main streets and shot their rifles in the air. My favourite part was the mine and the holographic play in it. Also, because it was scary it was scary and the sounds were really cool.” (Jett, 5/6H)

Jack & Lily (Year 5 JSC) will be speaking at assembly this week, so here is a sneak peak:

"We would like to thank all the amazing mums who helped out with the Mother's Day Stall on Thursday. We hope all the mums out there had a wonderful day!

On Wednesday 30th April, the 5/6 cohort went to Sovereign Hill to support out inquiry unit. Our inquiry unit is about Australia's history and has included events such as the Gold Rush in 1850's Ballarat. It was lots of fun and and we learned a bunch of new things.

On Wednesday 7th May, WPS Cross Country team headed to McIvor Reserve in Yarraville to compete against 7 other schools within our district. The day was a huge success and WPS took out the overall event as the winner for the 8th year in a row! Well done to all the runners and wish the students who qualified for divisional finals the best of luck next week.

This coming Monday, the 5/6 JSCs will be having lunch with former principals Tilly Barger and Billy Green! During this lunch we will be opening a Willy Primary time capsule that was buried in the ground 26 years ago by the Altona Rotary Club. We look forward to sharing the exciting things inside from WPS in 1999!"

What's Coming up in the Classroom in the Next Fortnight:

Maths: We continue with our learning on measurement by looking at Volume, Capacity and Mass. We continue to apply our skills in real-world problems. Timestables practise is still an area we encourage students to work on as often as possible to build confidence.

Reading: Students will continue to explore the class novel 'We Are Wolves' by analysing author's use of themes, identity and culture. They will also have a strong focus on inferencing during independent reading and small group instruction.

Writing: We are busy refining our skills in narrative writing, including using dialogue, punctuation and descriptive and figurative language. We continue drafting our narratives and take them through the writing process to publication.

Inquiry: Students will continue to undertake lessons and investigations into different aspects of Australian history, embedded throughout our reading lessons. During Week 5 and 6, we move along our timelibe to look at changes to the colony, experiences of Indigenous Australians, Ned Kelly and advancements in technology. Students are keeping a timeline of events specific to Australia and Williamstown.

Willy Kids & Respectful Relationships: This fortnight, Willy Kids are Problem Solvers. We will be working through various activities and games that require students to work together to achieve a common goal. They will also be practising the skill of problem solving in Respectful Relationships by helping other solve common problems of people their age.
