Chinese News

I am Kari O'Gorman. My first name is from Scandinavia, where it is both a male and female name, and my family name is from Ireland. This is how I have introduced myself to students this week.
We're developing a new program in the Chinese time slot, which has a focus on Humanities/Asian studies. We are starting with an over-arching theme of migration and our own origins, asking 'where am I from?' and creating a classroom art mural on puzzle pieces to show the diversity in our school.
At the moment, students are doing some research on where their family name is from, or where their ancestry may be from, to tie in with their understanding of where they fit in the world, and how migration is a large part of Australia's history. They are going to ask at home about their ancestry or find out the origins of their name.
Please note that I am handling this topic with sensitivity, knowing that not all students have access to this information in their families, or are growing up without their family of origin, and these students are being given options for research.
When our artwork is ready, I will ensure it is posted here in the newsletter!
