SAKG NEWS

Welcome back to term 2 everybody!
We are getting straight back into the swing of things in the kitchen with our best ever veggie soup and bread rolls. The main ingredient of our veggie soup is pumpkin and we have harvested some incredible pumpkins this year. We also use herbs and greens from the garden as well as carrots and celery, which keeps the students very busy as they chop everything up nice and small. The students are doing an amazing job honing their knife skills and seasoning the soup to perfection. Bread rolls are both simple and tricky, as getting the dough kneaded enough without making it tough can be a fine balance. Working in teams the students knead a chunk of dough for a bit and then pass it to the next person, so that everyone can compare how different the dough feels depending on the kneading technique used. The rolls are then shaped, brushed with milk and then topped with poppyseeds. The smell and taste of freshly cooked bread, crusty on the outside and fluffy on the inside is delightful and goes so very well with the soup.
To finish off we have been making ANZAC Biscuits and then doing something a bit special with them, ANZAC Biscuit Ice cream Sandwiches which have been a hit with everyone. It can be done with any biscuit, but there is something about the combination of the golden syrupy, oaty taste and texture of the biscuit with the creaminess of the ice cream means that it is especially delicious.
The garden program, this term, looks very different. With Jodie still on leave and Wendy not being available, classes will not run for the duration of the term. Lunchtime garden activities are still on and we encourage students to come out and assist with the ongoing maintenance and provide those much loved cuddles with the animals. We are very fortunate and grateful to have Lucinda oversee the garden and keep everything ticking along in Jodie’s absence.
Lastly, we would like to say a special thanks to the families of Alex P, Liam and Jeremy C, Rsmeet K, Paislie and Macey B for caring for our animals over the term break. They have returned very refreshed and well looked after.
THANK YOU!
Mrs O’Brien, Kate & Lucinda
