Reading isn’t just beneficial for academic growth—it also enhances wellbeing. Research compiled by Australia Reads indicates that reading for fun can alleviate stress, boost self-esteem, and foster empathy. Despite these advantages, nearly half of Australians have low literacy levels, and about 25% didn't read a single book last year.
To promote reading, libraries across Victoria are participating in the Warm Winter Read campaign, encouraging individuals aged 16 and over to develop healthy reading habits during the colder months. Participants can track their reading days, explore author-recommended books, and even win prizes. It's a fantastic opportunity for teens and parents to connect over stories and discover new favourites. To get involved, visit your local library or check out australiareads.org.au.
Mon 27 May – Fri 3 June
Reconciliation Week is held each year from 27 May to 3 June and is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures, and achievements—and to consider how we can contribute to reconciliation in Australia. These dates mark two significant milestones: the 1967 referendum and the 1992 Mabo decision. It’s an important time for us to listen, learn, and grow together as we acknowledge the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and work toward a more just, equitable nation.
At Wantirna College Library, we support Reconciliation Week by creating a welcoming space where students can engage with stories, voices, and histories that reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. We showcase a range of age-appropriate fiction and non-fiction titles, host displays that spark curiosity and conversation and provide resources to support classroom learning. Through books and storytelling, we help students build empathy, respect, and understanding—key steps on the path to reconciliation.
