National Walk Safely to School Day 2026 is on Friday, 22 May, with primary schools across Australia encouraging kids to walk, scoot, or ride to school. The 27th annual event highlights physical, safety, and environmental benefits, encouraging parents to park further away and walk to boost focus and health.

Key Details for 2026:

  • Date: Friday, 22 May 2026
  • Goal: Promote healthy habits, road safety, and reduced car usage around schools
  • Safety Advice: Children under 10 must hold an adult’s hand while crossing the road, and everyone is encouraged to stay alert and avoid devices

Benefits of Walking to School:

  • Health: Helps children meet the recommended daily minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity.
  • Academic: Active travel improves concentration and cognitive performance, helping kids arrive ready to learn.
  • Community: Reduces traffic congestion and pollution around school gates

Acknowledgement of Country

During Harmony Week, teachers worked with their classes to learn about and then write an Acknowledgement of Country for our school. We wanted the students to understand why an Acknowledgement of Country is read at events and we wanted to create one that represented our school community.

We are now seeking feedback from families so that we have considered all perspectives. Please read what we have below and if you think we have missed something, or that something should be amended, please email Michaela - mmackie@hrkensington.catholic.edu.au

Holy Rosary Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge and say thank you

to the Traditional Owners of this land where Holy Rosary school and Church is located,

the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation.

We thank them for taking care of this land;

the rivers, the trees, the animals and the sky and we promise to cherish this country and be kind to all people who walk on this Earth.

As a Mercy community, inspired by the values of compassion, justice and service, we commit ourselves to walking together in respect and reconciliation to help build a more just and hopeful future for all.

We pay our respects to the Elders past and present, and extend that respect to any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people here with us today. Thank you for sharing your stories and knowledge with us so that we may honour the past, strengthen the present and work together for a better future.
