Year 7 English students have had an exciting and inspiring start to the term as they

explored the topic “Ordinary Aussies – Extraordinary Acts.” Students have been discovering what it truly means to be a hero by learning about remarkable Australians such as Dylan Alcott, Evonne Goolagong, Steve and Robert Irwin, and many other everyday heroes.

Through engaging class discussions, videos, biographies, playscripts, and creative activities, students have explored qualities such as courage, kindness, determination and resilience. They have also been developing their own literacy skills through research, vocabulary building, multimodal tasks and reflective writing, while sharing thoughtful ideas about the impact heroes can have on the world around us.

Year 8 English students have had a fantastic start to the term exploring Australian poetry and the unique ways poets capture the beauty of the Australian landscape. Our students have studied poems including Dorothea Mackellar’s My Country and Wuri – Sun, learning about techniques such as imagery, symbolism, and descriptive language. 8G especially enjoyed getting creative by designing visual representations of My Country, using colour, symbols, and illustrations to bring the poem to life. Students also wrote short reflections explaining the ideas behind their designs and how they connected to the poem’s themes. It has been wonderful to see students combining creativity with literary analysis while developing a deeper appreciation for Australian poetry.

Year 9 English students have launched into an exciting exploration of the Hero’s Journey, discovering how heroes and storytelling continue to shape popular culture and literature. Our students investigated the stages of the Hero’s Journey through a range of engaging texts and films, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Spider-Man, The Lion King and Star Wars. Students explored character archetypes, narrative structure, film techniques and themes, while analysing how heroes grow through challenges and transformation. It has been fantastic to see students enthusiastically connecting modern films and stories to this timeless storytelling structure while developing their analytical and creative thinking skills.

Year 10 English students have launched into an exciting start to the term through their new unit, Future Worlds: Speculative Fiction! Over the past four weeks, students have explored the fascinating worlds of science fiction and dystopian fiction, analysing texts such as The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner and There Will Come Soft Rains. Students have investigated how authors use futuristic settings, powerful themes, and complex characters to comment on society and imagine possible futures. Alongside developing their analytical skills, students have also been building their own creative writing portfolios, crafting vivid dystopian settings, original characters, and imaginative story openings inspired by the genre. It has been amazing to see students engaging thoughtfully with big ideas about technology, society, and humanity while displaying their creativity in their own writing!

Year 12 English students have been hard at work this term as they prepare for their upcoming Trial Examinations. Classrooms have been filled with lively discussion, close analysis, collaborative learning, and plenty of determination as students continue refining their writing and critical thinking skills. From unpacking challenging texts to completing practice responses and revision activities, students have shown impressive commitment and resilience throughout the term. It has been wonderful to see students supporting one another, building confidence, and rising to the challenge as they work towards achieving their very best in the lead up to the HSC.
