Celebrations of Learning and Community

Production Camp
Our Beauty and the Beast cast set off to Upper Plenty Conference Centre for their annual production camp. Upon arrival, we were grouped into cabins and rooms with our peers, and gathered in the gym for the first of many rehearsals over the next 2 days.
Among the cast, many will say their favourite part about camp is the sheer amount of delicious food and countless memories formed. Despite frigid temperatures, the cast persevered and learned choreography for large scenes, revised blocking for other scenes, and kept their voices warm with singing rehearsals in the heated chapel.
The highlight of the first day was definitely the lip sync battle, where the cast was split into teams and sent off to create a show, lip-syncing to a preselected song. Ultimately, the Six Queens came out on top, with their powerful rendition of Ex Wives, followed closely behind by Top Gunettes and Fantastic Plastics. We closed out the night by watching last year's production of Rock of Ages and ended the night in our beds, heaters dialled as high as possible.
The next morning, we all rose and clambered to the coffee machines and various cereals and spreads laid out for us to make breakfast, before packing up our bags and returning to the gym for more rehearsing. After lunch, we moved to our first full run-through, figuring out areas for improvement and accomplishments for everyone.
After a gruelling two days, we returned to our homes, enjoying the long weekend before continuing with our efforts back at school, refining and learning new scenes to put on an amazing show at the end of August.
Year 12 Formal
Our Year 12 Formal at South Morang Ranges was a night filled with memories that we will treasure for years to come. Walking into the large, beautifully lit room felt surreal, as if all the moments from our high school journey had led to this one special evening. Looking around, it was heartwarming to see so many of our teachers there, including some familiar faces from our earlier years of Secondary Years who had played a part in shaping our experiences.
The evening began with teacher awards, celebrating the dedication and impact of the staff who had supported us throughout our schooling. After the awards, we sat down to enjoy a meal together, sharing stories, laughter and reflecting on how far we had come. Student awards followed, recognising the achievements and contributions of our classmates.
As the dance floor opened, the atmosphere changed from formal to celebratory and everyone came together to dance with friends, peers and even teachers. Looking back, the formal was more than just a College event; it was one of the last times our year level would be together before moving on to the next chapter of our lives, making every moment feel that little bit more special.

HGC Careers Expo 2026
You're invited to join us at our annual Hazel Glen College Careers Expo.
Year 11 and Year 12 Chemistry Excursion
Our Year 11 Chemistry students were in their element when they went on an excursion to the University of Melbourne. At the University, our HGC students got to test the concentration of nitrates, phosphates, copper and iron using UV-Visible Spectroscopy. They first determined a set of standards of known concentration to plot a graph of absorbance vs concentration, then students received a sample of unknown concentration, which they could then determine using interpolation.
Our Year 12 Chemistry students also got to visit Melbourne University. On this excursion, students utilised the IR machine and NMR machine to perform spectroscopy on 6 unknown molecules. They used the data and spectrums collected of the molecules to determine the structures of each of the molecules.
Year 7 Holocaust Museum Excursion
During term 2, students in year 7 have been studying the novel "Once" by Morris Gleitzman. The story follows a young Jewish boy, Felix, and his struggle to survive during World War II.
50 of our Year 7 students had the opportunity to visit the Holocaust museum and take part in the “Hidden Program”.
The "Hidden" Program focuses on the experiences of seven children who survived the Holocaust by living in hiding, mirroring the experiences of characters in "Once". Our Year 7 students followed these children's lives prior to the war, during the war and after the war when they immigrated to Australia.
Our students showed the utmost respect during the excursion and were thoroughly engaged in meaningful discussions with the presenters.
Student Reflections
- It’s important we do excursions like this so we learn history and so we don’t repeat the past, also we get more knowledge of it
- We can help people who are in danger if something like this repeats in the future
- Treat everybody equally and not criticise people as there is only one race - humanity.
- Always be kind to people and help them no matter what, even if they are mean to you.
- Be kind and courageous for other religions and equal
- Being kind to people and not discriminating peers
Year 8 - Respectful Chronicles Reward
Students in Year 8 Homegroups who have achieved the highest number of 'Respect' Chronicles participated in a Movie & Morning Tea session in the PAC with Mr Carrazza. The experience celebrated student achievements and consistent positive efforts in exceeding expectations. Well done to all who were there.
The Resilience Project - Filming
The Resilience Project, with whom Hazel Glen College has partnered with to deliver our whole College program in supporting student wellbeing, came to Hazel Glen College to talk to students in Years 7-12 about what it means to be a young person in Australia today.
Students were able to identify the struggles that some young people may experience, and the measures that can be taken to overcome these.
Some of the struggles mentioned included:
- Stress related to school
- Peer-to-peer relationships
- Family relationships
- Loss of identity and friendships as they mature
- Technology based stresses (such as not being able to switch off)
Students similarly described the positives that help them overcome the stresses of their daily lives, which included:
- Having a supportive family
- Having a strong social group to lean on and talk to
- Keeping a positive moral compass
- Exercise and organised sport
- Healthy nutrition
Students also spoke about what it means to have a trusting relationship, what they can do to support others and themselves, whilst also identifying how they live The Resilience Project's three core GEM values of practising Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness.
The recordings that were filmed will now be used to develop further resources for Australian schools, including Hazel Glen, on the issues that the Australian youth are facing in today's current climate.
Thank you to those students who jumped out of their comfort zone and got involved, and keep an eye out for The Resilience Project's resources in 2027 to see if you made the final cut!
