Respectful Relationships

Respectful Relationships at CPS

At CPS, student wellbeing is a priority, and as part of our Wellbeing lessons, we are continuing to implement the Respectful Relationships program across the school.

Respectful Relationships is a Victorian Government initiative that supports schools to take a whole-school approach to building a culture of respect, inclusion and safety. The program was developed by experts from Deakin University and The University of Melbourne, and has been part of the Victorian Curriculum since 2016. There are 8 topics addressed every year from Prep to Grade 6, including:

  1. Emotional Literacy
  2. Personal Strengths
  3. Positive Coping
  4. Problem-Solving
  5. Stress Management
  6. Help-seeking
  7. Gender and Identity
  8. Positive gender relations

Through this program, students participate in age-appropriate lessons and activities that help them to:

  • build positive relationships with others
  • understand and manage their emotions
  • develop empathy and respect for differences
  • respond to real-life social situations in safe and thoughtful ways

These important skills are taught through the Health and Physical Education and Personal and Social Capability areas of the curriculum, ensuring that social and emotional learning is embedded in everyday classroom practice.

The program also provides teachers with practical tools and strategies to support students’ wellbeing, while promoting a consistent, school-wide culture of equality, respect and safety.

We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with families to support our students in developing the skills they need to build positive, respectful relationships both at school and beyond.
