Showing Up!

Showing Up!
Through the journey of education and personal growth, a simple yet profound principle stands out: the power of showing up. It's not just about being perfect or always having it all together. It's about being present, participating, and engaging with life’s opportunities, even when we're not at our best. I would contend that 'showing up' is an overlooked and under-rated value and approach. Showing up is about embracing the moment, taking risks, and allowing ourselves to be seen, vulnerabilities and all.
In the context of school life, showing up extends beyond attending classes and events; it's about being mentally and emotionally present. Engaging in the learning process, listening to peers and teachers, and being open to new ideas and perspectives exemplify this commitment. It's about caring, making an effort, and embracing challenges, even when outcomes are uncertain. It's the essence of one of our four values: Ready to Learn.
"the power of showing up...It's about being present, participating, and engaging with life’s opportunities, even when we're not at our best"
This brings us to a particularly exciting opportunity for showing up: our whole school (rescheduled) swimming carnival on Tuesday, 27th February. Participating in this event is a perfect example of the essence of showing up. It's not just about the competition or who swims the fastest; it's about being part of a team, supporting each other, and enjoying the spirit of our school community. Whether you're in the pool or cheering from the sidelines, your presence contributes to our collective spirit and demonstrates the values we hold dear.
Showing up, like participating in our swimming carnival, teaches us resilience. It pushes us out of our comfort zones, allowing us to learn from both successes and setbacks. Each dive into the pool, every cheer for our mates, builds the kind of character and resilience that prepares us for life's challenges.
Being there for each other, especially during events like the swimming carnival, strengthens our school's sense of community, especially the House spirit. It shows we're reliable, trustworthy, and part of a team. We can have fun together in ways that can't be planned for or expected. These connections, built on mutual support and shared experiences, are invaluable, enriching our school life and beyond.
One of the great lessons of showing up, particularly in a competitive yet friendly environment like the swimming carnival, is learning that perfection is not the goal. It's okay to make mistakes, to be vulnerable, and simply to be human. This acceptance makes our school a welcoming place for all, where being oneself is celebrated. There are opportunities to show up in the pool, no matter your ability or speed but showing up to only support and encourage your peers and your House is more than enough.
As the swimming carnival approaches, let's all make an effort to be there, to participate, and to support one another. It's a fantastic opportunity to show what our school is all about: community, resilience, and the joy of being together. Let's make it a day to remember, filled with spirit, enthusiasm, and the power of showing up.
Parents and carers are welcome throughout the day, but the best way you can show up is in supporting and insisting that your child does show up. Parents and carers have a unique perspective as they can look back and identify the times they didn't show up, or didn't show up fully. So many regrets.
"the pain of trying and failing may be intense but at least it tends to be over rather quickly, the pain of failing or the regret of not showing up and missing out, on the other hand is intense and rarely goes away"
The act of showing up, with all our imperfections and vulnerabilities, is a testament to our commitment and engagement in school life. It offers us the chance to grow, to connect, and to be part of something bigger than ourselves. As we look forward to the swimming carnival, let's embrace every opportunity to be present, for ourselves and for each other, making the most of the incredible journey that lies ahead.
