On Wednesday 8 May, a group of twenty Year 9 and 10 female and gender-diverse students set off on a train trip into the city. Our destination was the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, for an Expo created with girls and gender-diverse students in mind - the Trade & Tech Fit Career Expo.
In its second year, the Trade & Tech Fit Career Expo has been designed to encourage female and gender diverse secondary school students to explore exciting careers in traditionally male-dominated industries. It prides itself on being 100% hands-on, where students get the opportunity to get a little taste of different careers and start to consider their options for post-secondary pathways.
Our students had the opportunity to design video games, lay bricks, weld, fly planes, program a robot, safety test equipment, use power tools, learn to paint and much more. They particularly enjoyed checking out the huge Mack truck and some construction vehicles, having a look at the 3D printing process, using a laser engraving program and generally just chatting with the different exhibitors to explore a huge range of careers that they never knew existed.
We enjoyed a lunch along Southbank to end our time in the city. Students reflected upon things that they had learnt and careers that piqued their interest, whilst excitedly doing a “show-and-tell” about all the goodies that they picked up at the expo.
A huge thank you to our students who enthusiastically attended this excursion, making the most of such a great opportunity. We hope that it has given you a lot to think about and that some of these learnings will make their way into our pathway conversations with you over the next few years. We look forward to running this excursion again in 2025!
