VCE VM Celebrating our Community

Senior School

As part of our unit of study Literacy for Personal Use, the VCE -VM Year 11 Literacy students have been extending their learning by making important community links with our local retirement village, Wantirna Views

On Monday and Tuesday, we visited Wantirna Views and students had the opportunity to interview the elderly residents in order to learn about their lives.  Students asked questions and took notes to capture the wonderful memories and experiences that were shared with them.

This term, students have been learning about biographical text types by studying exemplars. The purpose of this visit was to provide an additional real-life biography context through the idea of a living library.

We plan to maintain ongoing communication with the residents who participated, and foster positive relationships for our students. This process will result in the VCE VM literacy students composing special biographies of the participants.

At the conclusion of the project, there will be a presentation of the biographies to the residents and a celebration of learning.

We thank the staff at Wantirna Views for their assistance and support with our students. A big thank you also to Wantirna staff, Nicholetta Rigano, Kate Cui and Steven Daw for accompanying students on the excursion and supporting them with their learning.

We also acknowledge the respectful behaviour of the our Year 11 VCE VM  Literacy students as they interacted with the local community.
