It has been a wonderful start to Term 4 with brighter, warmer days. Our students have enjoyed spending more time outdoors, engaging in sensory-based learning experiences involving water, slime, and shaving foam to name a few. This hands-on approach continues to support their exploration and development in a fun and engaging way.
Looking ahead, we have an exciting and busy term, with students working closely with our Performing Arts team in preparation for the 2025 School Concert. We can’t wait to showcase their hard work and talent!
In English this term, we have been working on developing early literacy skills. The students have been engaging in a variety of fun activities to assist with building these foundational skills such as, letter recognition, sounds, and handwriting. Teachers have been modelling these skills and working alongside students using AAC devices, letter tracing, and sensory activities to support their learning. We’ve been exploring books like Brown Bear, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and The Wheels on the Bus, with students showing great enthusiasm as they listen, look at the pictures, and engage with the stories. We are excited to continue building their confidence and nurturing their exploration of literacy.
In mathematics this term, students have been exploring place value up to 20, learning about Australian coins and notes, and practicing addition and subtraction. Through hands-on activities, students have been comparing groups of items, sequencing the days of the week, and building their understanding of time. They’ve enjoyed activities like matching coins and notes, creating coin rubbings, and ordering objects. These engaging experiences have supported their learning in fun and meaningful ways.
Through The Resilience Project and Respectful Relationships programs, students have continued to develop their social and emotional capabilities, including positive coping strategies, relationship-building, and decision-making. They’ve enjoyed taking part in Yarning Circle, where they have the opportunity to share thoughts and feelings in a safe space. Through Play to Learn activities, students are also building their social skills while engaging in imaginative play.
In Science this semester, students have been exploring a range of topics in both chemical and physical science. In Term 3, we explored how changes can occur when different materials are combined, such as ice and water, cream and sugar, and flour and water, through hands-on experiments and observations. Students especially enjoyed making playdough and squishing it in their hands. They also loved playing with coloured ice cubes and observing them melt, with some students using the melting ice to write their names on the concrete. At the end of Term 3, students took part in growing chia seeds. They decorated paper cups with crayons, paint, and textas before adding the seeds. Over the course of three weeks, students observed their chia seeds grow into little sprouts, which was a wonderful hands-on learning experience.
This term, the students have been involved in a variety of exciting special events and celebrations. Students have enjoyed participating in weekly swimming sessions, where they developed both swimming skills and life skills such as getting changed, waiting for their turn, and following instructions. In Music Therapy, students have really enjoyed using different instruments to create sounds and respond to songs. These experiences have all contributed to building both social and practical skills while offering plenty of opportunities for exploration and fun.
