Year 5/6 News

Learning Centre Four

The past few weeks in LC4 have been a whirlwind of activity, with students putting in an incredible effort towards preparing and performing in our school production of The Wizard of Oz. Now that the curtain has closed, we’ve enjoyed our first “normal” week of learning again, and it’s been great to settle back into routine. Amongst all the excitement, we also celebrated Book Week, which added to the fun and colour of our days. It’s hard to believe we’re already racing towards the end of Term 3 – the time has flown by! As we step into spring, a friendly reminder that students are required to bring and wear their hats at school.

Book Week 2025

Book Week was a huge success this year! We kicked things off with a wonderful parade, where students proudly showed off their amazing costumes – there was such a variety and so much effort put in by everyone. The teachers also got in on the fun, dressing up as Wally from Where’s Wally, which brought lots of smiles and laughs. Throughout the week, students explored the shortlisted Book Week texts during literacy, sparking great discussions and activities. To finish off, the whole school voted for their favourite story, and the winning titles were Spiro and A Leaf Called Greaf!

Wizard of Oz

In the lead-up to our highly anticipated Wizard of Oz production, students spent many days in full dress rehearsals, perfecting their roles and getting ready for the big stage. The performances on Wednesday and Thursday night were truly spectacular – the main cast shone brightly, bringing the story to life with talent and confidence. The hard work and effort from every year level was clear to see, and it all came together to create a magical production that we can all be very proud of.

Students Champion Local Wildlife at Love Your Locals Day

On Friday, September 5th, ten enthusiastic Grade 5 and 6 students represented our school at the Love Your Locals Day event at Werribee Open Range Zoo. This collaborative initiative, supported by Wyndham and Hobsons Bay City Councils alongside the Werribee River Association and Nature West, focused on protecting Western Region wildlife and their habitats. Our students proudly presented their research display, featuring five endangered local species, including the Orange-bellied Parrot, Plains Wanderer, Growling Grass Frog, Swift Parrot, and Eastern Barred Bandicoot. Their presentation emphasised practical conservation solutions, such as using recycled toilet paper to prevent deforestation and keeping cats indoors to protect native animals.

The day included engaging activities like grassland walks, tree planting, and animal encounters. Students exchanged knowledge with eight other regional schools and learned from zoo experts and wildlife specialists. "I really enjoyed presenting and talking to other schools and the zookeepers," shared Natalie, who presented on the Plains Wanderer. Emily, who focused on Swift Parrots, added, "It was really fun to see other people's projects and participate in planting activities." The excursion proved both educational and inspiring, reinforcing our students' commitment to environmental stewardship. Special thanks to Serena and Sam for their invaluable support in preparing materials and assisting throughout the day.

Literacy: During the last few weeks, our students have been exploring a variety of Book Week texts, particularly picture story books, they have participated in discussions, responding in a variety of different ways. It was great to see how excited they were to view all the different stories. Some favourites were Spiro and a Leaf Called Greaf.

Numeracy: As we have been preparing for the Wizard of Oz we’ve been exploring location and coordinates, students explored finding objects, placing them on a map and learning about the uses of coordinates.

Inquiry: Students are continuing to plan, and develop their Media Projects, they are excited about the process and sharing what they have learnt in week 9.

Religion: We have continued to learn about Psalms and how we can use Psalms in our daily lives, to show what we have learnt students have developed their own psalms to form the OLSC 151st Psalms. Students have worked hard to develop their psalms and pictures.

Wellbeing: Students have been working hard to develop their own wellbeing tool kits, this is where students identify tools and strategies that they can use when they are feeling stressed, worried or anxious.

Special Events: Buddies Week 7 went well with the students working on their sock puppets. Year 6 Sport Captains have also been doing some Soccer, Basketball and AFL clinics with the Preps this past week and will continue until the end of term.
