Year 1/2 News

Learning Centre One
We can hardly believe how quickly this term has flown by! Next week, we head into the Term 3 holidays, and it’s wonderful to look back on what the students have achieved. Over the past few weeks, they have shown such dedication to their learning while also pouring time and energy into the production, which turned out to be a huge success and a real celebration of their hard work!
Literacy:
In Literacy, students celebrated Book Week with a variety of exciting activities. They explored this year’s shortlisted books and enjoyed dressing up as their favourite characters for the Book Parade. It was wonderful to see their creativity shine through in the imaginative costumes and designs they created.
Adding to the fun, all of the teachers came dressed as “Wally,” challenging students to spot the real one! Students also had the opportunity to vote for their favourite Book Week books, with Spiro and A Leaf Called Grief taking out the top spots.
In Literacy, students have also been learning about the features of rhyme and experimenting with creating their own rhyming words and short verses. Alongside rhyme, students were introduced to alliteration, discovering how repeating initial sounds can make writing more engaging and fun. They enjoyed coming up with their own examples like “silly snakes slither” or “happy horses hop" and sharing them with the learning group.
Math:
In Mathematics, students have been building their skills in multiplication, division, and telling time. To deepen their understanding of multiplication and division, they explored the use of arrays, which helped them visualize and make connections between the two operations. Students also learned how to tell the time to the hour, half past, quarter past, and quarter to. Through hands-on activities and real-life examples, they are developing confidence in reading clocks and applying their knowledge in everyday situations. The students even made their own clock to manipulate and use while exploring time.
Religion:
The students have been learning about 'Creation and Stewardship'. They explored the idea that we are all called to care for the world around us and be responsible stewards of the environment. To help deepen their understanding, students read The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. The story provided a meaningful way to discuss how our actions impact the Earth, and the importance of making choices that protect and preserve creation for future generations
Inquiry:
In inquiry the students have been learning about branching. The students have been creating their own “choose-your-own-adventure” style activities with simple yes and no responses that lead them to a variety on answers. This helped them understand how different choices can lead to different outcomes, while also developing their logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students also learned about safe and responsible online behavior. They discussed protecting personal information, using strong passwords, identifying trustworthy sources, and showing kindness and respect in digital spaces.
Performance: We're off to see the Wizard!
The students in 1/2 gave a truly spectacular performance and made wonderful contributions to the whole-school production of The Wizard of Oz. Their energy, creativity, and teamwork shone through on stage, and it was clear how much effort they had put into preparing for the show. It was such a joy to see their confidence grow as they sang, acted, and supported one another, creating a memorable experience for the whole school community. We are so proud of their achievements and the way they represented their Learning Group with enthusiasm and spirit.
Father's Day:
On Wednesday, 3rd September, our school community gathered to celebrate the significant men in our lives with a special Father’s Day breakfast and prayer. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and gratitude as we acknowledged and honoured those who hold such an important place in our hearts. We hope all our fathers, grandfathers, and father figures enjoyed a wonderful day and were truly cherished by their loved ones.
Lost Property in LC1
We currently have a large collection of lost property in LC1, including jackets, jumpers, and other clothing items. Since most of these are unnamed, we haven’t been able to return them to their owners. Please take a moment to check LC1 to see if any of these belongings might belong to your child/children.
Reminders:
- Playground Use After School: The playground is not open after school during pickup time. Please remind your child to head straight to you and avoid playing on the equipment. Your support is greatly appreciated.
- Ball games: At the end of the day students' shouldn't be engaging in ball games due to the amount of traffic within the school grounds, as it risks injury to others.
- iPads: Students are expected to bring their iPads fully charged each day, as they are an essential tool for learning.
- Brain Food: Students have a brain food break at 10:00 AM. Please pack a healthy snack such as fruit or vegetables for this time.
- No Hat, No Play - Just a reminder that we are now entering hat season. All students will require a hat for play and if they don't have a hat, students will be asked to play in the shade.
