Literacy

Welcome to the Literacy page of the OLSC newsletter. Term 3 is always an exciting and busy one where Literacy is concerned - with author visits, Book Week, and the end of the Premiers' Reading Challenge. Thank you to all families who have supported
OLSC Book Week Parade 2025
The Book Week dress-up parade took place during Book Week and what a celebration it was! We had many families join in the fun as students and teachers paraded around the hall in their wonderful costumes. The teachers were tasked with the extremely difficult job of choosing year-level winners of the most creative costumes. These students won a signed book written by Kate and Jol Temple and I think you'll agree, they looked sensational!
Last year, Amanda suggested that all of the school staff should dress up as Wally from the Where's Wally book series. We thought that was a great idea...
2025 Book Fair
This year, the Book Fair will be held later in the year due to the school performance being held in the hall. The Fair will be at OLSC in the first week of Term 4 - just in time to buy some Christmas gifts!
Guess the Bookworm Competition
During Book Week, our student leaders ran a 'Guess the number of Bookworms' competition. Students were able to have a guess for 50c and the monies raised will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. We will be sending the ILF $87.00 - a big thank you to everyone who participated. Congratulations to our winning students!!
The Great Book Swap
On Wednesday, the 3rd September, OLSC held a Great Book Swap in the school hall. Students brought in gold coins to buy pre-loved books donated by the generous families of OLSC. It was an exciting time and many children went home with big smiles on their faces. Thank you to the Arts and Social Justice Leaders for helping to organise this event and also to Zina, a wonderful parent helper who assisted with setting up the books.
We raised a huge $393 through the Book Swap for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). Added to the $87 raised for the Guess the Bookworm competition and the $250 from National Sorry Day in Term 2, OLSC will be sending $730 to the ILF, which will be used to buy books and resources for remote indigenous school communities.
Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge
The 2025 Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge has come to an end. Congratulations to all students who completed the challenge this year - you should be very proud of your efforts. Next term, once we have received the certificates in the mail, they will be presented to those students who achieved the challenge requirements.
