A Word from Justin

Term 3, Week 8 - Friday 12th of September, 2025

Dear Families and Students of OLSC

It is hard to believe that we only have one left of term.  On looking back it has been one epic term that has been filled with successes and blessings.  The whole team here at OLSC thank all of our community for your continued support.

Whole School Assembly 19th September

Please join us for a Whole School Assembly on Friday 19th September at 12:00pm.  This will be a jam packed assembly as we missed the normal mid term one due to the sports centre being set up for our production.

We invite all of our school community to gather at the end of term to celebrate all of the wonderful learning and achievements that have occurred throughout Term 3.

Student Leadership Workshop

On Thursday the student leaders attended at leadership workshop with other. local schools.  The day was hosted and run by our Federal Member Joanne Ryan.  April, Seth, Eason, Rohan, Bentley, Ranveer and Van represented OLSC in an impressive way.  It was great to see their confidence as they interacted in small groups from other schools.  Eason even shared his 90 specch with the entire group.

Hats

As we are now in September please ensure that your child has a school hat each day. The measures below help reduce UV exposure during school hours and promote healthy behaviours.

Why Hats Matter in Primary School:

1. Protection Against Harmful UV Radiation

  • Childhood exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays significantly increases the risk of
  •  skin cancer later in life. Victoria’s Department of Education and SunSmart emphasize the use of sun-protective measures—including hats—when UV levels reach 3 or above, typically from mid-August to the end of April
  • Hats with broad brims, legionnaire styles, or bucket designs effectively shield the face, ears, and neck—areas most susceptible to UV damage

2. Legal Duty of Care for Schools

  • Victorian schools have a legal obligation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic) to minimize health risks—like UV exposure—for both staff and students. Adopting sun-smart practices, including mandatory hat-wearing, helps schools fulfill this duty and keep our community safe.

3. School Practices - from September 1st

  • From 1 September, as Victoria moves into warmer months and UV levels increase, schools shift into heightened sun-safe protocols
  • Hats become mandatory for outdoor activities—students without appropriate hats are required to stay in shaded zones

Building Update

The plans and pre-work for our new building of the library / discovery centre and learning spaces is well and truly underway.  The town planning permit has been granted and 6 different companies have been chosen to tender for the project.  Each complany will visit the school next week to have a walk through.  Although the build time will be disruptive it will be short term inconvenience for a fantastic facility to service the students of OLSC for many years to come.  It is expected that the build will begin later this year and be ready for use in the latter part of 2026.

Wizard of Oz

I wish to congratulate all of the students and staff for their contribution to our first school production since 2017, The Wizard of Oz.  I have received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback on the production from OLSC families and friends.  The 2 performance nights were both a great success and I know you all join me in thanking and congratulating Jacq for bringing this to life.

Thanks also to those that helped out and gave of their time often after school hours.  To name a few, thank you Cheryl, Tian, Danielle, Chrissy, Jodie, Fan, John and Sarena and James Stevens; your generousity of time and sharing your talents is greatly appreciated.

Community Mass

Our next community mass is planned for Sunday 21st September.  As always this will take place in the OLSC Sports Centre and begin at 10:00am.  I encourage all of the community to coome along and join in this Eucharistic celebration.

RUOK? DAY:

The 1/2 Team hosted a morning tea to mark R U OK? Day to encourage meaningful conversations about wellbeing. It was a fantastic opportunity for staff to come together, connect, and support one another. Students also participated in R U OK? Day activities during Wellbeing lessons, exploring ways they can check in with their friends and foster a caring community. Remember, RUOK? day is ANYDAY.

Early Dismissal

On Friday the 19th September we will have a 1:00pm finish.  Please make arrangements for your child / children to be picked up at this time.

MACSSIS 2025

Would you like to receive a $200 uniform shop voucher or $200 off school fees?

Have your say to help improve our school... It only takes a few steps to participate!

1. Access the email sent to you on Monday Week 7 from John, with the subject ‘MACSSIS - Family School Improvement Survey’. Check your spam if you cannot find it. This was sent to the first listed parent in our system - so check all of the email addresses you have registered with OLSC.

2. Use the link and the PIN from the email to gain access.

3. Once you have completed the survey, take a screenshot of the final page and send it to jdini@olscwyn.catholic.edu.au to go in the running for a $200 uniform voucher or $200 discount off school fees.

Our community’s opinions are critical to understanding how our school is performing – MACSSIS is a key data source for guiding the ongoing work to improve our school.

All participation is invited, welcomed and 100 per cent voluntary. The surveys are not a test; they are an inclusive way to support the work we are already doing to improve our school. Everyone has the right to refuse to participate, or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during or after completion of the survey. Please notify the school if your child does not wish to participate.

LITERACY NEWS - THE GREAT BOOK SWAP

Last Wednesday, on National Indigenous Literacy Day, the OLSC Great Book Swap took place in the school hall. This was made possible thanks to the generosity of our families and teachers, who all donated pre-loved children's books for the students to purchase. The books were $1 for the children to buy - many students left the hall with armfuls of beautiful books to take home. Our senior leaders worked hard collecting books from classrooms each day and then set up the book displays ready for the swap.

We raised a huge $393 through the Book Swap for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). Added to the $87 raised for the Guess the Bookworm competition and the $250 from National Sorry Day in Term 2, OLSC will be sending $730 to the ILF, which will be used to buy books and resources for remote indigenous school communities.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at OLSC in the first week of Term 4 - just in time to buy some Christmas gifts! This event is always a big success for OLSC! All purchases made at the Book Fair will contribute to Scholastic dollars that will be used to uy resources for our school.

Prayer for the New Church

The parish prayer for the new church is below.  Please feel free to include this in your family prayers as a new church for the Manor Lakes community would be a great feature of our parish.

Share your Child's Achievements
